The Mitchell City Council Monday agreed to allow the Mitchell Police Department to participate in the planning of a possible regional law enforcement center as part of Davison County’s proposed county jail project.
Commissioner John Claggett addressed the council. “We’re just asking for the group to get together and work on it together,” said Claggett. “We all have vested interest in this. The expenses on jail systems are extraordinary, so we need to figure out the best way to do it.”
City Administrator Stephanie Ellwein says city staff has been asked several times if the city would be interested in locating Mitchell Police in the facility. “At this point, I just don’t know how staff can say yes or no to that without council giving some kind of direction because there’s going to be costs associated,” Ellwein explained.
The county recently hired consulting firm Tegra to start the planning process.
