By request of Ward Three Councilor Marty Barington, the Mitchell City voted to delay action on a proposal to expand the Corn Palace using up to a possible $23-million dollars, and maybe money from an anonymous donor. “We’re getting just a little bit too ahead of where we want to be for any kind of action to approve the fact of where that dollar-amount is at,” Barington said. “And let alone on the project itself until we get those other so-called players in place I guess, and pieces of the puzzle come together.”
Mitchell businessman Roger Musick told the council to just kill the plan. “I’ve been hearing about this expansion for about twenty-years,” said Musick. “I’ve been hearing about this large donor for twenty years. If you come in tomorrow with $20-million in the bank, I don’t care what you do with it. I don’t think this is a very good use of funds.”
The council voted seven to one to postpone action with Ward Three Councilor Mike Bathke casting the lone “no” vote.
