Mitchell City Council unanimously passes COVID-19 emergency ordinance

The Mitchell City Council has unanimously voted to adopt an ordinance broadening the city’s powers in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis. But not before several business owners challenged the need for the ordinance and requested clarification. The objective is to help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus in enclosed areas or businesses where large numbers of people gather. Some of the businesses may continue to operate by using take out, delivery or drive through. It highly encourages businesses to follow CDC guidelines for reducing the spread.

Mayor Bob Everson acknowledged the city will take a hit in the wallet. “There’s no question this is going to have huge impact,” said Everson.

Council president Kevin McCardle told the audience it’s a matter of choice. “What it basically comes down to for me is businesses are going to suffer… yes they are,” McCardle said. “But what’s more important, your business or your family. I say my family is.”

The ordinance takes effect as soon as it’s published in the City’s official newspaper.
