Mitchell fire investigation underway

The Mitchell Fire Department is investigating the cause of a fire Thursday afternoon around 3:25 that heavily damaged garage units of townhomes in the 1600 block of East First Avenue.

Fire Marshal Shannon Sandoval says arriving firefighters observed heavy fire coming from units five and six, which are garages. “Within three or four minutes of our arrival, fire had vented out the attic space already,” said Sandoval.  “We had a very large response, we called for a second alarm.” He said they knew they were going to need more personnel.

He says at this point two units are considered a total loss. “Nobody was home at either of these apartments at the time of the incident,” Sandoval said. “I believe it was called in by a passer-by.” There were no injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. Sandoval says approximately 50 firefighters were on the scene including mutual aid from Alexandria, Ethan and Mount Vernon.
