Mitchell Main Street nuisance property set for demolition

It looks like the end is near for 301 and 305 North Main Street starting next week. Mitchell Area Development Corporation executive director Mark Vaux says the process will start next Tuesday November 12th as the property is fenced off and demolition set to begin the next day.

He says it’s a time of mixed emotions. “We have to be mindful and respectful of all of the people and businesses that have poured their heart and soul put a lot of blood sweat and tears into those businesses,” said Vaux. “So while it’s exciting…it’s mixed emotions about the Moody’s and the other businesses that have been there.”

301 and 305 North Main Street are set for demolition next week.

Vaux says the 300 block of North Main will close to traffic for up to six days starting next Tuesday during demolition.

Once the site is clear the next step is asking for requests for proposals from qualified developers. Vaux says he’s received several inquiries over the last several weeks from developers within South Dakota including three from the Mitchell area.

Deterioration and a failed remodeling attempt resulted in the closure of the 100 block of West Third Avenue more than two years ago plus ongoing litigation between the city and property owner. A settlement was eventually reached and the property conveyed to the development corporation with the goal of future improvement.
