A 24 year old man from Mitchell is in a federal prison following his conviction of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
The U-S Attorney’s Office reported Dakota Moore was sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
A federal grand jury indicted Moore for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person in October 2025. He pleaded guilty on January 2, 2026 and sentenced April 13th.
On August 5, 2025, law enforcement officers were looking for a certain vehicle after receiving reports someone in the vehicle had fired shots. When law enforcement found the vehicle, they found Moore inside the vehicle and in possession of a firearm. Moore is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior conviction for a felony crime.
Moore was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
