Mitchell School Board discusses school district policy regarding fundraising projects

A discussion regarding fundraising for a variety of activities dominated Monday’s Mitchell School Board meeting.

Superintendent Joe Childs prefaced the discussion by stating school district funds provide the sufficient needs for participation. “The fundraising efforts, that doesn’t mean that the money is being squandered, or wasted, or just thrown away with reckless abandon,” said Childs. “It means that it’s used to purchase things that aren’t critically necessary for participation.”

Board member Deb Everson brought up the fundraising discussion on behalf of community member’s questions. “Well, why are they doing it every year for every reason without, you know, what are they buying if everything’s provided for that kind of thing?” Everson shared.

Activities Director Cory Aadland offered assurances on how the donated money is handled. “We’re not just putting money away and holding on to it,” Aadland explained. “It’s coming in and it’s going out.”

Currently all activities-related fundraisers require school district approval and are overseen by the Activities Office. While the board took no action, the idea of having the fund balances available on the school district website for public view is a possibility in the future.
