Mitchell School District announces COVID-19 related operational changes

Mitchell School Superintendent Joe Graves has announced significant changes in a letter to parents:

After consulting with health officials, the Mitchell School District will remain in session with regular hours tomorrow, Friday, March 13, 2020.

However, after conferring with school officials from many of the schools of the ESD and others with populations similar to Mitchell, I am making the following changes to our operations beginning tomorrow, with the intention of slowing the spread of the virus, especially between regions of the state:

  1. All out-of-district travel and competitions are cancelled until further notice. Extracurricular practices, however, will continue at this time.
  2. School facility use by external groups will be ended, effective Friday and until further notice. The one exception to this, because participation remains below state-recommended norms, is the concert series which will be held this weekend at the Performing Arts Center.
  3. In the event of any disruption of school operations during the school day in the future, the City of Mitchell Rec Center has announced that youth will not be allowed at the Rec Center.
  4. EMBE after school care will reduce its services effective Monday as a result of staffing shortages due to DWU schedule changes. Check with EMBE officials for details.

Because of these many changes, I would recommend that you call in advance to any community activities you plan to attend. Cancellations of many activities is becoming commonplace.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I will continue to communicate with you at least daily during this situation.

Sincerely,

Joseph Graves, Superintendent of Schools
