Mitchell’s Hunger Tree exceeds its second goal in helping feed seniors

This year’s James Valley Community Center “Hunger Tree” has shattered its second goal in providing meals to 51 seniors struggling with food insecurity. Director Jessica Pickett says the Mitchell community has once again shown its generosity is a big way. “We had a gentleman stop by and give us a rather large donation and we had another large donation Thursday,” said Pickett. “And now have enough money to give each participant two full meal-tickets.”

The Hunger Tree drive has collected more than $9,000 as of Thursday to help feed food insecure seniors.

She says the recipients are more than grateful to receive the meal tickets because their income is limited. “This frees up some funds for them to have a nutritious meal and pay their other bills,” Pickett said.

Pickett says this year’s Hunger Tree campaign has raised more than $9,000 and donations are still welcome at the James Valley Community Center at 300 West First Avenue.
