The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has released the names of those involved in a fatal crash last week in Brookings County where one person died, one seriously injured and three others uninjured.
Shortly before 6am last Thursday, 38 year old Ashley Leigh Harbin from Toronto, South Dakota was driving a Subaru Forester southbound on Interstate 29 near mile marker 140 in the northbound lanes. At the same time, 19 year old Daten Briar Odom from Brookings, 34 year old Devon Halpate from Newark, Ohio, and 25 year old Efrain Ramirez Martinez from Brookings were traveling north in the northbound lanes at the same location. Harbin struck Odom’s GMC causing her Subaru to come to a stop in the roadway. The GMC rotated and struck Halpate’s Ford. Martinez struck the stopped Subaru. Odom sustained fatal injuries. Harbin was life flighted to a Sioux Falls hospital. Martinez, Halpate, and his passenger Benjamin Stang were not injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation.
