Names released in multi-vehicle fatal crash near Highmore

Three people were injured, one fatally, in a multi-vehicle crash six miles east of Highmore shortly after 10 o’clock Wednesday morning.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety reported three motorcycles were traveling westbound on US Highway 14 near 346th Avenue. 45 year old Adam Russell Ray was driving a Chevrolet K1500, traveling eastbound. He crossed the center line and began driving on the wrong side of the road. The first motorcyclist, 78 year old Marvyn Heaton of Redfield was able to avoid the Chevrolet. The second motorcyclist, 77 year old Dorothy Jean Heaton of Redfield, collided head-on with the Chevrolet. The third motorcyclist, 70 year old Sherrie Johnson of Tulare, avoided a collision by riding into the ditch where she lost control and became separated from her motorcycle.

Marvyn Heaton was uninjured. Dorothy Heaton sustained fatal injuries, and Johnson sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Ray sustained minor injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
