Mitchell Superintendent Joe Childs recently offered the school board a peek at a new program in the works. It’s called “summer scholars”. “Scholars program that was available to any of our current Mitchell students that are either in begindergarten or kindergarten through third grade,” Childs said. “So that are those students who would then be entering either kindergarten, first grade through fourth grade next year.”
He says the program would be two six-week sessions running daily from eight am to three pm, including breakfast and lunch. “With the benefit for a family to make the decision to stay until five o’clock, for example,” he said.
Childs says there would be a cap on enrollment to start. He says the benefit would be clear. “We’ve got catch-up and annual growth happening now 12 months a year rather than just the nine months that we’re regularly in school,” Childs explained.
He’s also arranged for funding and will unveil the final plans to the board and community during January’s meeting.
