A 16 year old man from Highmore died early Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle versus train crash near Wessington.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety reported at 1:44 am, a Rapid City, Pierre, and Eastern Railroad train was traveling eastbound on the train tracks. At the same time, the driver of a Ford F-150 was traveling northbound on 374th Avenue. The Ford drove into the railroad crossing and was struck by the train. The driver sustained fatal injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is leading the crash investigation. Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
