Property tax relief on the way

State lawmakers passed two property tax reform bills last session.

Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen says homeowners haven’t seen the effects yet — but it’s coming. “The governor is very proud of what we have already been able to achieve,” said Venhuizen. “You know, Governor Rhoden got past the largest property tax cut in state history. People will see that on their tax bills in January.

The Lt. Governor also pointed out because it passed in March, taxpayers will see the reduction kick in, in January.

One of those bills gives counties the option to lower homeowner property taxes by raising local sales taxes.

Venhuizen predicts some counties will do just that later this summer.

Although county commissions can choose this option, local residents can petition to put those decisions to a public vote.
