Public Safety Chief Lyndon Overweg is retiring

Mitchell’s Chief of Public Safety, Lyndon Overweg, is calling it a career. “I turned in my retirement notice to the Mayor here a couple of weeks ago,”, said Overweg. “I’m looking at a June 14 retirement date.”

The 53 year old Overweg’s been in law enforcement for almost 31 years. He interned with the Mitchell Police Department while attending Dakota Wesleyan University. “That really sparked my interest,” he said. “Lucky enough they had an opening shortly after I graduated and was able to get on with them and been here ever since.”

Overweg says the most rewarding parts of his career were hearing back from some of the people the department helped and working with, in his words, “some great people.”

Overweg is unsure what he’ll do next, but he plans to stay in Mitchell.
