It’s been a source of rumors for several years, and now Mitchell’s former Super K-Mart store has a new owner.
Runnings based in Marshall, Minnesota announced it’s purchasing the property from GFI-Mitchell Investments Partnership. Plans are to move the existing store at 1400 South Burr across the street.
Acting Mitchell Area Development Corporation Director David Lambert says it’s exciting. “Especially when they’re (Runnings) going to provide more opportunities to serve the demands of our population base of more than 45,000 who shop here in Mitchell,” said Lambert.
The former Super K-Mart building is nearly 95,000 square feet, or about 23,000 square feet larger than its current location.
Runnings plans to sell the 72,000 sq. ft. building once relocation is completed and the new store opens for business.
The existing store employs approximately forty-five full and part-time employees. Runnings plans to hire additional team members later to operate the new, larger store.
Ironically, Runnings current location at one time housed K-Mart and later Menards.
