Federal and Tribal law enforcement agencies are teaming up in an effort to solve crimes involving guns on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
The FBI, ATF, Oglala Sioux Tribe and U-S Attorney’s office are all part of the effort.
U-S Attorney Ron Parsons says they’re looking for matches on shell casings from hundreds of guns. “They learned that there was a backlog of about between 500 and 600 guns that had been seized in various circumstances by tribal law enforcement over the years, but never tested through the ATF’s national system,” Parsons said.
The FBI says there was a match with a gun found in another part of South Dakota linked to the 2022 murder of six-year old Logan Warrior Goings.
He was killed when someone fired 14 rounds into his family’s home, striking him while he was sitting on a couch.
