It was a long, hard-fought battle, but Sioux Falls now has a new Mayor.
Christine Erickson took the oath office Friday afternoon, replacing Paul TenHaken, who served for the past eight years.
She becomes the first woman mayor of South Dakota’s largest city. “It is an honor to be the first woman elected to serve as Sioux Falls mayor,” said Erickson. “This is a historic first, and I’m proud of what it means, but this moment is bigger than one person. It belongs to every citizen who helped us break this glass ceiling by making their vote about experience and accomplishment. “It belongs to every little girl who now knows that this office is open to her.”
Mayor Erickson thanked former Mayor TenHaken for his service, which was extended a few weeks because of the close vote.
She has her work cut out for her, with the annual Mayor’s Budget Address scheduled for next week.
