There’s a new item on the Mitchell City Council agenda added by Mayor Jordan Hanson. It’s called City Council/Mayor Comments. It’s an opportunity for the council and Mayor to informally discuss topics or ideas without taking action.
Mayor Hanson brought up the idea of goals and offered one dealing with population growth. “20,000 people in Mitchell is probably the goal that I would say is most important,” said Hanson. “Because a lot of businesses won’t come to town unless we’re over 20,000.
He also pitched a plan for term limits for Mayor and City Council. “We’ve been working on it a little bit,” Hanson said. “It’s all up to you guys if you want to decide it or not.” He went on to say, “I think one of the most noble things is to take power away from yourself.”
City Attorney Justin Johnson said the council could decide term limits without a public vote. Again, this was for discussion only.
