Across the 50 states and U-S territories Wednesday night, a simultaneous reading of the Declaration of Independence took place in celebration of America’s 250th birthday last weekend. South Dakota’s reading was held in the State Capitol Senate Chambers in Pierre.
State Historical Society Director Dr. Ben Jones introduced the 15 minute presentation. Moments later Governor Larry Rhoden recited the most famous lines of the document. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
Readers also included the Boys and Girls State Governors Coltyn Raymond and Quynn Nielson, Attorney General Marty Jackley, House Speaker Jon Hanson and the Presidents of South Dakota and Dakota State Universities and the University of South Dakota.
