South Dakota House of Representatives votes to impeach Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg

The South Dakota House of Representatives voted 36-31 Tuesday to impeach Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg during a special session at the state Capitol.

Representative Lance Koth of Mitchell voted to impeach. “I couldn’t convince myself that our A-G was completely honest at the time shortly after the accident and during all the investigation,” Koth said. “There are just some red-flags that kept on popping up.”

Representative Paul Miskimins, also of Mitchell, voted no and supported the special Committee on Investigation. “I decided because they are more knowledgeable in the law and in the constitution than I am, that I would support their recommendation,” Miskimins said.

Ravnsborg now faces trial in the State Senate where it takes a two-thirds majority of Senators to convict.

Ravnsborg struck and killed Joe Boever who was walking at night along the shoulder of a state highway in Hyde County in September of 2020.

The Attorney General is temporarily removed from his office until the Senate impeachment trial is complete.
