President Trump late Tuesday night announced the United States had agreed to delay placing a 50% tariff on $20-billion dollars of certain Canadian products.
Senator Mike Rounds called it a work in progress. “This is really good news,” said Rounds. “We’re happy that at the last hour they were able to come up with an agreement, I don’t know everything which is in the agreement yet, but I was very happy to see that we weren’t going to have additional tariffs being imposed at this point.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune concurred. “Sounds like they punted it for a few days. I hope they strike a deal,” said Thune. “Canada is important for us and South Dakota and the country.
Thune continued, “You know, Mexico and Canada are our two biggest trading partners and that’s true here in South Dakota. So, we need Canada as a trading partner.”
The tariffs have been postponed until 12:01 am Saturday while discussions are continuing.
