Suspect in Deputy’s death facing murder charge

The Moody County Deputy Sheriff who was killed during a vehicle pursuit Friday was apparently run over by a fleeing suspect who’s now charged with Premeditated First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Eluding.

Forty year-old Joseph Hoek of Sioux Falls made his first court appearance Monday morning in Flandreau. He’s being held without bond pending his next court appearance scheduled for this Friday.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is prosecuting the case. He says the incident that killed Chief Deputy Ken Prorok began with a citizen’s call for help…..

This is a death penalty-eligible case. Jackley says he needs to talk to those impacted before any decision is made on whether to pursue capital punishment….

Hoek is being held without bond pending his next court appearance scheduled for this Friday.
