The cause of Thursday afternoon’s structure fire in Mitchell appears to be electrical in nature

Mitchell Fire and EMS responded to 1605 E. 1st Ave at 3:25 PM on 8/8/2024 for reports of a structure fire. Engine 3 arrived on scene and encountered heavy smoke coming from units #5 and #6. A second alarm was called immediately as to have additional firefighters and apparatus respond.

Shortly after Engine 3’s arrival, the fire vented the roof structure and heavy flames could be visualized throughout the above-mentioned living units. The largest amount of fire was located on the southern side of the structure, and firefighters immediately made entry into #6 to conduct a victim search.

Adjacent units were also searched at this time. When fire began to vent the roof structure, the decision was made to remove firefighters from the interior, and a defensive strategy was taken. All fire personnel began to extinguish the flames from the exterior of the structure. At approximately 5:00 PM the fire was extinguished and crews began to search for potential areas that could be a point of reignition.

Firefighters removed several animals from the living units. All the animals appeared to be unharmed.

Ethan, Mt. Vernon, and Alexandria Fire Departments responded for mutual aid during this event. The American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and Davison County Search and Rescue also responded.

One individual was transported to the hospital, but no other injuries were reported.

The origin of the fire appears to be electrical in nature, and the investigation is still ongoing. The Mitchell Police Department, South Dakota State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are also assisting with the investigation.
