Dakota Wesleyan University announces the appointment of two returning members to its Board of Trustees.
Daniel F. Duffy, Rapid City, is a partner with Bangs, McCullen, Butler, Foye & Simmons with offices in Rapid City and Sioux Falls, where he has worked since 1992. His areas of practice include medical and hospital malpractice, legal malpractice, health care administration, personal injury defense, general liability defense, products liability and commercial law.
Duffy is a 1983 graduate of DWU with a B.A. in History and earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1990.
He has made presentations to both faculty and law students in the areas of trial skills, liability, HIPAA, depositions, medical records, confidentiality and several others. Duffy has a long list of awards and recognitions including finishing as a finalist in national moot court competitions; multiple writing awards; USD commencement speaker and many others. DWU has honored him as a Young Alumnus of the Year; Outstanding Service to Alma Mater; commencement speaker and Athletic Hall of Fame inductee. He has been awarded the Order of St. Benedict from Catholic Social Services, is a past member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish council, the Western South Dakota Catholic Foundation, the Rapid City Catholic School Board and past executive committee member of the United Way of the Black Hills.
Duffy previously served on the DWU Board of Trustees from 1995-2008 and again from 2011-2013.
Duffy and his wife, Karrie, have eight children ranging in age from 33 to 17. Dan, Karrie and two Duffy brothers, Bernie and John, are all DWU alumni.
A second member who will return to the board is Betty Oldenkamp of Sioux Falls. Oldenkamp served as the President and CEO for Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota from 2006 throughher retirement in 2021. Prior to that, she was the Cabinet Secretary for the South Dakota Department of Human Services for five years, initially appointed to the position by Governor Janklow and re-appointed by Governor Rounds. Oldenkamp previously held the positions of Director of the Division of Developmental Disabilities and Director of the Division of Mental Health.
A native of Murdo, S.D., Oldenkamp graduated from DWU in 1982 with a degree in Psychology and attended graduate courses at Northern State University in Aberdeen. In 2023 she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from DWU.
Oldenkamp has served as a volunteer board member for numerous entities including League of Women Voters where she is president-elect; South Dakota Board of Nursing; Lutheran Services of America board of directors; Sioux Falls Development Foundation and Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce boards; South Dakota Council of Juvenile Services; Minnehaha County and Pennington County Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative Steering Committees and others. She is a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church where she assists with services as a reader and communion server.
In her free time, Oldenkamp enjoys time with family and friends, gardening, concerts and theatre, and travel.
