The 2022 Mitchell Kernels football schedule has been released, highlighted by five of Mitchell’s nine regular season games at home, including a first time homecoming matchup with Sioux Falls Jefferson.
Mitchell is coming off a 3-7 season in 2021, that saw the Kernels secure the #5 seed for the Class 11AA Playoffs, losing at Yankton 42-21 in the quarterfinals. The Kernels will have a chance to avenge that season ending loss vs. the Bucks when they take on Yankton in the season opener at Joe Quintal Field on Friday, August 26 at 7 pm.
On Saturday, September 3, Mitchell will host Sturgis in the 7th annual Kernel Bowl at 6 pm.
The first two road games of the season see the Kernels travel to the 5-time defending 11AA State Champion Pierre Governors on Saturday, September 10, followed by their first game at Aberdeen Central since 2011.
Homecoming will take place on September 23 with a first time matchup vs. Sioux Falls Jefferson. The Cavaliers are the lone 11AAA team on the schedule this season.
The longest road trip of the season will be at Spearfish on September 30, followed by two straight home games to start October vs. Watertown and Huron. Mitchell picked up road wins vs. the Arrows and Tigers in the final two weeks of the 2021 regular season.
The Kernels conclude the regular season at Dana J Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings when they take on the Bobcats on Thursday, October 20.
Mitchell will not face 11AA teams Tea Area or Douglas.
