AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT – WEDNESDAY (2nd Round)
Winner/Colome 4, Lake Norden 3 – A two-out rally in the ninth inning gave Winner/Colome an improbable 4-3 win over Lake Norden. Winner/Colome would trail 3-2 with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the ninth inning before four straight hitters would reach. Chandler Bakely was hit by a pitch and then Lake Norden 2B Tony Campbell made an error on an Austin Calhoon two hopper that should have ended the game. An Austin Richey walk would load the bases and a Luke Bamberg single to right would score two runs and win the game for the Pheasants. J.J. Farner went all nine innings for Winner/Colome, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Lake Norden starter Jordon Johnson got the loss, giving up four runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts.
Kimball/White Lake 2, Flandreau 1 – Behind the pitching of Zak Wallner, Kimball/White Lake advances into the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win over Flandreau. Wallner did not give up a hit until the sixth inning, allowing only four hits all night with two of them coming in the ninth inning, along with 10 strikeouts on 138 pitches. Kimball/White Lake scored both of its runs in the top of the third inning, getting RBI’s from Seth Kirsch and Brian Zeman. Flandreau starter Jordan Gesling pitched well in the loss, allowing only two runs on three hits with eight K’s over nine innings. Flandreau would threaten in the ninth inning with a pair of single and a stole base to score it’s only run of the game. The Cardinals would leave the tying run at first base.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
– SDSU Women’s Soccer kicked off their 2022 season with a 4-0 win over Green Bay last night in Blaine, Minnesota. The Jacks will have their final exhibition match on Saturday in Sioux Falls when they take on Augustana at 5 pm.
MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Girls Tennis started its season on Monday with a pair of wins in Huron, defeating the Tigers 7-2 and Aberdeen Roncalli, 9-0. The Kernels move up to Class AA this season after winning their third straight Class A State Title last Fall. Mitchell will be at Brookings on Monday to take on the Bobcats and Sioux Falls Jefferson in a triangular.
— Mitchell boys and girls soccer kick off their season at home vs. Harrisburg on Friday. The girl’s match is a 4 pm, followed by the boys at 6 pm at Joe Quintal Field

— Dakota Wesleyan kicks off their first fall activities on Thursday, August 18th when Tiger Volleyball travels to Florida to take on Georgetown and Columbia International, while DWU Women’s Soccer will be a Bellevue starting at 4:30 pm.

— The Dodgers Chris Taylor hit the go-ahead home run in the 6th inning, while Joey Gallo added a 3-run shot in the 7th in the Dodgers 8-5 win over the Twins. It’s 10 wins in a row for L.A., their longest in 5 years. The Dodgers have the majors’ best record at 77-33 and are 16 games in front of 2nd-place San Diego in the NL West. Jorge Polanco and Gary Sánchez homered for Minnesota, which fell out of the AL Central lead after its loss and Cleveland’s win at Detroit. The Twins have today before starting at 3-games series vs. the Angels on Friday night.
— Guardians beat the Tigers 3-2 Wednesday night.
— Top Atlanta prospect Vaughn Grissom homered in his major league debut to lead the Braves to an 8-4 victory over the Red Sox. Grissom was called up earlier in the day from Double-A. The 21-year-old hit the first pitch he saw in the 7th inning over the Green Monster and the seats above it and onto the street below for his first big league hit. Atlanta completed a 2-game sweep. The Red Sox lost their fourth straight game, and their sixth of seven.
— Seattle’s Carlos Santana snapped an 0-for-17 slump with a go-ahead 2-run homer during Seattle’s 3-run 7th inning as the Mariners rallied to beat the Yankees 4-3. Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 45th homer of the season for the Yankees, who have lost 8 of 10.
— Francisco Lindor scored 3 times for the Mets in a 10-2 win over Cincinnati. Lindor has tied a Mets record by scoring a run in 13 consecutive games. New York has won 6 in a row.
— The Padres would score 6 runs in the 3rd inning and 7 runs in the 6th to defeat the Giants 13-7. All 7 runs scored in the 6th inning came with two outs.
— Texas rookie Leody Taveras drove in a career-high 6 runs, including a bases-clearing double as part of a 5-run 10th inning as the Rangers beat the Astros 8-4. Astros starter Justin Verlander gave up 3 runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts in 6 innings. Verlander leads the majors with 15 wins and a 1.85 ERA.
— Royals rookie MJ Melendez hit a tiebreaking homer in the 7th inning to send Kansas City past the White Sox 8-3. Chicago is now 2.5 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central, despite being just 1 game over .500.
— The Phillies had a 3-run rally in the 8th inning off NL ERA leader Sandy Alcantara and beat the Marlins 4-3 for their 7th straight win. The Phillies won for the 12th time in 13 games. They are 41-19 since June 1, vaulting them into 2nd place in the wild-card race.
— The Angels get past Oakland 5-4 in 12 innings for a three-game sweep.
— Milwaukee’s Rowdy Tellez hit a tying homer in the 9th inning and made a key defensive play in the 10th, setting up Willy Adames’ game-ending RBI single that gave the Brewers a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay.
— The Tigers have fired general manager Al Avila, ending a 7-year tenure with no playoff appearances. Detroit entered Wednesday at 43-68, last in the AL Central. The Tigers had only one winning season during Avila’s tenure. Avila was the only Latino general manager in the majors.
BASKETBALL
— A lawyer for the widow of Kobe Bryant told jurors that a “culture of callousness” led Los Angeles County deputies and firefighters to share photos of the remains of Kobe Bryant and other victims of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed the Lakers star, his 13-year-old daughter, and 7 others. Vanessa Bryant’s lawyer said the photos were “visual gossip” that were shared “for a laugh.” Bryant is suing for invasion of privacy. An attorney for LA County said the photos were an essential tool at the crash scene and that officials successfully kept them from becoming public.
TENNIS
— Serena Williams lost her first match since telling the world she is ready to leave professional tennis. No one knows exactly how many more matches Williams will play before walking away. The 23-time Grand Slam champion exited the National Bank Open on Wednesday night with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Belinda Bencic. The 2nd-round match at the hard-court tune up for the U.S. Open came a day after the 40-year-old Williams announced “the countdown has begun” on her playing career, saying she wants to have another child and pursue business interests. She made it sound as if her final goodbyes could come at the U.S. Open. It begins Aug. 29 in New York.
NFL
— Deshaun Watson will start Cleveland’s exhibition opener at Jacksonville while waiting to learn if the NFL will succeed in keeping him off the field much longer. Watson is potentially facing a year-long suspension for sexual misconduct. He’s playing Friday night against the Jaguars. It’s the quarterback’s first game since Jan. 3, 2021, his final one with the Houston Texans. Watson sat out last season after demanding a trade and before he was accused of assault and harassment by two dozen women during massage therapy sessions in Texas. Watson was suspended six games last week for violating the personal conduct policy, but the league wanted a tougher penalty and appealed the decision.
— Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is still healing from an appendectomy 2 weeks ago and there is no timetable for his participation in training camp. The 3rd-year quarterback has been observing practice from a golf cart or scooter. Burrow’s father said last week that it might be a “few weeks” before his son is able to practice.
NASCAR
— Kurt Busch says he pushed himself too hard trying to return to NASCAR competition and will miss his 4th consecutive Cup Series race because of concussion-like symptoms. Busch has been out since crashing in qualifying on July 23 at Pocono Raceway. He had hoped to be back on Sunday at Richmond. Ty Gibbs will again replace Busch in the car.
COLLEGE
— Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says the upcoming Big Ten television contract with NBC is a “perfect” way for the network to complement its deal with the Fighting Irish. Swarbrick held a live chat for Notre Dame’s alumni association. He addressed recent developments with the Big Ten and how they could impact the school’s ability to remain a football independent. The Big Ten is moving toward media rights contracts with Fox, NBC and CBS. NBC has had exclusive rights to broadcast Notre Dame home games since 1991. Swarbrick says NBC having more college football will help promote Notre Dame games.
— Former Washington State football coach Nick Rolovich has filed a claim against the university seeking $25 million for wrongful termination after he was fired last year for refusing to get vaccinated against COVID. Rolovich’s attorney has previously indicated Rolovich would take legal action, claiming religious discrimination. Rolovich was denied a religious exemption from Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s mandate requiring state employees to get the vaccine. Rolovich is Catholic.
