Berkeley Engelland dominates during day two of state track

Mt. Vernon/Plankinton’s Berkeley Engelland dominated day two of the South Dakota High School Track and Field meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

CLASS A
Berkeley Engelland of Mt. Vernon/Plankinton beat the state meet record, set by herself last year, in the 400 meters during Friday’s prelims with a time of 54.96 seconds. Engelland’s record time in 2022 was at 56.20 seconds in the event. She also won the 800 meter prelims in 2:13.51 and the prelims of the 200 meters in 26.20 seconds.

Wagner freshman Ashlyn Koupal won the high jump at five feet, six inches. Eighth grader Makenzie Hetland of MVP tied for sixth with a jump of five feet.

The Ethan/Parkston girls 4X400 meter relay team of Lauren Ziebart, Ella Pollreisz, Marissa Storm and Morgan Maxwell placed third in the prelims in 4:11.02, while Hanson’s Eliza Oltmanns, Karlie Goergen, Taziah Hawkins and Alyssa Moschell finished seventh in 4:13.46. Coming in eighth from Kimball/White Lake was Christine Gaulke, Ryann Grussing, Dani Deffenbaugh and Kaitlyn Priebe.

In the girls discus throw, Aubyn Schmidt of McCook Central/Montrose placed third at 128 feet, 11 inches. Ashlyn Tapio of Ethan/Parkston was fourth at 125 feet, five inches, while Clara Fink of MVP finished fifth with a throw of 125 feet, two inches. Gracelyn Leiseth of Hamlin won the event with a state tournament record throw of 169 feet, 11 inches. Her teammate Kami Wadsworth was second at 137 feet, five inches.

Reagan Rus of MVP finished first in the prelims of the 300 meter hurdles in 47.25 seconds. Brandy Pulse of MCM was a close second at 47.31.

Reed Rus took home fourth in the 300 meter hurdles prelims in 41.72 seconds.

Platte-Geddes boys took home third in the 4X200 meter relay prelims as Braxton Breukelman, Skyler Hanten, Trevor Rolland and Aiden Bultje finishing in 1:32.84.

Kolter Kramer of Ethan/Parkston finished fourth in the boys 400 meters at 51.05 seconds.

CLASS B
Avon’s Courtney Sees won the long jump for the second straight year at 17 feet, 1/2 inch.

Scotland’s Trinity Bietz finished second in the discus throw at 121 feet, seven inches, while Rylee Rudebusch of Howard was a close third at 121 feet, four inches.

Freeman eighth grader Rylee Peters placed second in the prelims of the 300 meter hurdles in 47.58 seconds

Canistota’s Josiah Schroeder won the boys 3200 meter run in 9:59.15, just over three seconds better than second place Tavin Schroeder of Freeman Academy.

Shad Bosma of Corsica-Stickney finished first in the 300 meter hurdles prelims in 41.30 seconds.

CLASS AA
Mitchell’s 4X400 meter relay team of Lainee Forst, Carsyn Weich, Mia Mullenmeister and Lizzie Tyler finished fourth in Friday’s prelims in 4:03.71.

Lincoln Bates took home a fifth place finish for Mitchell with a six feet high jump.

Treyson Schulz led Mitchell in the triple jump with a sixth place finish of 42 feet, 8 1/2 inches.

Brooke Bartscher had a seventh place finish in the 200 meter prelims for the Kernels in 27.12 seconds.

Mitchell’s Bryce Palmer finished eighth in the 300 meter hurdle prelims in 41.40 seconds.

Alexier Padilla, Bryce Palmer, Jagger Tyler and Nathan McCormick took home eighth in the prelims of the 4X400 meter relay with a time of 3:30.04.
