Mitchell, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball team battled fiercely against No. 5 Briar Cliff in the GPAC semifinals on Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell, bringing their season to a close.
The Tigers (24-6, 18-4 GPAC) established momentum early, shooting 40.8% from the field and 84.6% from the free-throw line. Despite leading in all statistical categories, they fell short against No. 5 Briar Cliff.
Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter, each scoring just seven points, but the Chargers found their rhythm late, securing the win with a 17-12 fourth-quarter edge.
Dakota Wesleyan was led by Shalayne Nagel, who recorded 13 points and eight rebounds while shooting 6-of-11 from the field. Avery Broughton also added 13 points and six rebounds, while Rylee Rosenquist and Taliyah Hayes chipped in 10 points each. The Tigers shot 40.8% from the field and an impressive 84.6% from the free-throw line but were unable to capitalize on key opportunities in the second half.
Briar Cliff’s Kennedy Benne led all scorers with 16 points, while Grace Flanagan added 14, including four three-pointers. The Chargers shot 38.6% from the field and 78.6% from the free-throw line, making crucial shots down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Tigers outrebounded Briar Cliff 32-27 and scored 28 points in the paint, but costly turnovers and second-chance opportunities proved to be the difference. Briar Cliff capitalized on DWU’s 15 turnovers, scoring 13 points off them, while DWU managed just five points off BCU’s six turnovers.
