BROOKINGS, S.D. – The South Dakota State women’s basketball beat Denver 71-37 Thursday night at First Bank & Trust Arena.
The Jackrabbits held the Pioneers to just nine total field goals and 17 percent shooting for the game. Denver’s 37 points scored is a season-low for the Pios and is the fewest points allowed by the Jackrabbits this year.
SDSU improves to 25-3 overall and 15-0 in conference games. The Jackrabbits have won 62 consecutive Summit League regular season contests. Denver is 8-20 overall and 1-14 in the Summit League.
SDSU led by just six, 13-7, after 10 minutes, then used a big second quarter to pull away. The Jackrabbits scored the first nine points of the second quarter, then the Pioneers scored five straight before SDSU ended the half on a 12-0 run.
Haleigh Timmer scored 22 points to lead the Jackrabbits with a 6-for-12 shooting performance that included four 3-pointers. Timmer also contributed five rebounds and three assists.
Madison Mathiowetz went 3-of-4 with a pair of treys for her nine points. Paige Meyer and Mesa Byom added eight points apiece. Byom paced the Jackrabbits with 10 rebounds and Meyer gave out a team-high four assists.
As a team, SDSU recorded 19 assists on 25 made baskets. The Jacks shot 50 percent for the game and 52 percent from long range with 11 3-pointers. They forced 12 turnovers that resulted in 21 second chance points.
Denver tallied 10 steals and forced 14 total turnovers that turned into 11 second chance points. The Pioneers were led by Jordan Jones’ 13 points, 11 of which came from the free throw line. Jones also recorded six rebounds.
