Engelland leads MVP to a second place finish at the state meet

Berkeley Engelland ended the 2023 South Dakota High School State Track and Field meet with wins in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters to lead the Mt. Vernon/Plankinton girls to a second place finish in Class A.

CLASS A
Berkeley Engelland won the 100 meters (12.36 seconds) by one hundredth of a second over Custer’s Jordyn Larsen. She also won the 200 meters (26.12 seconds) and the 400 meters (56.11 seconds) on Saturday, the third and final day of the state meet.

Also for MVP, Reagan Rus won the girls 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.45 seconds, while Brandy Pulse of McCook Central/Montrose took home fourth place in 15.70 seconds. Pulse also had a second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles (45.93 seconds), while Rus was third at 46.10 seconds.

Clara Fink (MVP) took home third with a shot put of 40 feet, 1 1/2 inches, with Wagner’s Emma Yost (39 feet, 6 inches) coming in sixth.

Reed Rus placed second in the 110 meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.39 seconds and also had a third place finish in the 300 meter hurdles (41.19 seconds).

Lee Reiser of Platte-Geddes took home first in the shot put with a throw of 57 feet, 7 1/4 inches, while Brock Tuttle of Hanson place fourth at 52 feet, five inches.

Platte-Geddes boys won the 4X100 meter relay as Skyler Hanten, Trevor Rolland, Hayden Sprik and Aiden Bultje finished in 43.80 seconds

In the boys 4X200 meter relay, Platte-Geddes took second with Braxton Breukelman, Skyler Hanten, Trevor Rolland and Aiden Bultje finishing in 1:32.01. Hanson’s Weston Kayser, Ethan Cheeseman, Hadley Wallace and Sutton Dewald came in fifth with a time of 1:33.61. Finishing sixth from Ethan/Parkston was Cael Ryther, James Deckert, Connor Prunty and Kolter Kramer in 1:34.41.

Kramer also placed seventh in the boys 400 meters, clocking in at 51.43 seconds.

In the boys long jump, James Deckert of Ethan/Parkston was fourth (20 feet, 9 3/4 inches), while Keaton Weber of Hanson came in seventh (19 feet, 10 3/4 inches).

The Ethan/Parkston girls 4X400 meter relay team of Lauren Ziebart, Ella Pollreisz, Marissa Storm and Morgan Maxwell finished fifth with a time of 4:10.11. Kimball/White Lake’s relay team of Christine Gaulke, Ryann Grussing, Dani Deffenbaugh and Kaitlyn Priebe placed sixth in 4:11.16.

Lauren Ziebart also came in second in the long jump at 16 feet, 8 3/4 inches.

CLASS B
In the girls 100 meter hurdles, eighth grader Rylee Peters of Freeman finished second in 15.47 seconds. Peters would also take home second in the 300 meter hurdles (47.67 seconds).

In the girls 4X100 meters relay, Freeman’s Makenzie Scharber, Rylee Peters, Kate Miller and Zenovia Butler came in second with a time of 52.39 seconds. Howard’s quartet of Ellie Becker, Grace Lewis, Trinity Palmquist and Melanie Calmus would finish fourth in 52.73 seconds.

Freeman (Rylee Peters, Kate Miller, Vaida Ammann and Zenovia Butler) would also finish fifth in the 4X400 meter relay in 4:12.38

Shad Bosma of Corsica-Stickney brought home a third place finish in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.86 seconds.

CLASS AA
Mitchell’s 4X100 meter relay team of Ava Brannan, Mia Mullenmeister, Claire Hegg and Lizzie Tyler placed second and broke the school record with a time of 49.82 seconds. The Kernels (Lainee Forst, Carsyn Weich, Mia Mullenmeister and Lizzie Tyler) also finished second in the 4X400 meter relay in 4:01.43 with the second fastest time in school history.

The Kernels 4X400 meter relay team of Connor Singrey, Bryce Palmer, Jagger Tyler and Nathan McCormick took home fifth with a time of 3:25.93, the third fastest time in school history.

Bryce Palmer finished seventh for the Kernels in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.80 seconds.

Senior Brooke Bartscher ended her Mitchell career with an eighth place finish in the 200 meters at 27.51 seconds.
