MITCHELL
— The Mitchell Aces face No. 1 seed Harrisburg in the first round of the Class A South District Tournament on Friday at 5:30 pm in Yankton. Yankton takes on the Sioux Falls Brewers on Friday at 8:30 pm. The two winners will play on Saturday at 1 pm. while the two losers play at 4 pm.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball team released its 2025-26 non-conference schedule this week. The Jackrabbits are slated for 14 regular-season, non-conference games, five of which will be played in Brookings. The full schedule includes eight NCAA Tournament qualifiers from last season. SDSU hosts Augustana in an exhibition on October 29 before officially opening the season at Creighton on November 3 in Omaha. The Jackrabbits will play their home opener against Rice on November 7. SDSU will travel to Rapid City to take on Montana at the Monument on November 15, then returns to the east side of the state to play Gonzaga on November 20 at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls. SDSU will also take part in the Cancun Challenge playing Columbia, Kansas State and North Carolina, November 27-29. The Jacks will be at national ranked Duke on December 18, followed by a home game vs. Texas on December 21.

Parkston Rays 9, Parkston Mudcats 4 – Dylan Soulek with a three-run HR, while Seth Muth had a triple with a pair of hits and two RBI’s. Nolan Dvorak went 7 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and seven hits for the Rays.
Platte 9, Corsica 2 – Grant Doom with a HR and three RBI’s. Michael Buitenbos with three hits, while Grayson Hanson had two RBI’s. Travis Gant pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and no runs.

— The Twins start a three game road series vs. the Cleveland Guardians tonight at 6:10 pm with Joe Ryan getting the start. Minnesota is three game back of Cleveland for second place in the AL Central and six back of Seattle for the final Wild Card spot in the American League.

— The San Diego Padres made several bold moves at the trade deadline. General manager A.J. Preller added closer Mason Miller from the Athletics and All-Star first baseman Ryan O’Hearn from Baltimore while swinging five total deals for seven major league players. The Padres got Miller and starter JP Sears from the A’s, landed catcher Freddy Fermín from Kansas City and acquired O’Hearn and outfielder Ramón Laureano from the Orioles.

— Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin has asked the Washington Commanders to trade him because of a contract dispute. McLaurin has been holding in at training camp. The veteran reported to camp Sunday after skipping the first four practices and parts of the offseason program. He remains on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury while contract talks continue. McLaurin had 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns last season.
NBA
— New York Knicks forward Mikal Bridges has agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract extension. Bridges averaged 17 points per game this past season for New York, making the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years.
GOLF
— Charlie Woods, the 16-year-old son of Tiger Woods, is tied for second place at the Junior PGA Championship after shooting a 5-under 66 during the third round in West Lafayette, Indiana. He stands at 12-under for the week. Players are vying for two automatic spots on the Junior Ryder Cup team, which will take on Team Europe from Sept. 23-25 in New York. There is also one captain’s pick, although Woods, who is ranked 20th in the latest American Junior Golf Association rankings, is unlikely to be selected for it.

— Shannon Sharpe will not return to ESPN, according to a person familiar with the situation. The decision follows his recent settlement of a lawsuit accusing him of sexually assaulting a woman during their relationship. Sharpe’s last appearance on ESPN was in late April when the lawsuit was filed. No details of the settlement have been released. The lawsuit sought $50 million. Sharpe called the accusations false and hoped to return for the NFL season. Instead, ESPN decided to part ways with the Hall of Fame tight end.

— Federal prosecutors say former NBA star Gilbert Arenas has been arrested along with five other people on suspicion of hosting illegal high-stakes poker games at a Los Angeles mansion owned by Arenas. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Wednesday that all six defendants are charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business and one count of operating an illegal gambling business.

— Marcel Ozuna drove in Matt Olson with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give the Atlanta Braves a 12-11 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night in a game that featured 30 combined hits. Ozzie Albies had four hits, scored two runs and drove in two for the Braves, who broke a 3-3 tie with eight runs in the eighth inning, only to give up eight runs in the bottom of the inning. It’s the first time in major league history that both teams scored eight runs in the eighth inning. Combined, there were five pitchers, 25 batters and 16 hits in the eighth. The Reds and Braves play today at 11:40 am in Cincinnati before heading to Bristol Moter Speedway in Tennessee to play on Saturday night at 6:15 pm on FOX.
— Cal Raleigh homered again, while rookie Cole Young also went deep as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 6-0. Raleigh hit his major league-leading 42nd home run in the fifth inning, two batters after Young, to give Seattle a 3-0 lead. George Kirby threw six shutout innings, allowing three hits with six strikeouts. Seattle currently has a one game lead over Texas for the final Wild Card spot in the American League and a three-game lead over Cleveland.
— Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice homered in the first two innings as the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 in a game interrupted by rain for nearly three hours.
