STATE AMATEUR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT – THURSDAY
— The Alexandria Angels held on for a 5-4 win over Volga on Thursday night at Cadwell Park and advance to the State Amateur Baseball Tournament semifinals. Alexandria led 5-0 after five innings before Volga scored four runs in the eighth. A.J. Wilber entered with the tying run at second and recorded the final two outs, then closed out the ninth for his fifth save of the season. Alex Mizsak earned the win, throwing seven shutout, allowing three hits with seven strikeouts. Preston Nedved had three hits and three RBIs, while Dakota Munger added three hits and an RBI. Jerrod Zens had two hits and scored twice. Volga starter Jordan Sagedahl struck out 19 over nine innings for Volga. Alexandria improves to 19-3 and will face Dell Rapids PBR in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Cadwell Park.
— Dell Rapids PBR advanced to the State Amateur Baseball Tournament semifinals with a 3-1 win over the Parkston Mudcats on Thursday night at Cadwell Park. Brett Mogen allowed one run and five hits over nine innings, with 11 strikeouts. Mogen retired 16 straight batters at one point. Chris Kropuenske, Brayden Pankonen and Weston Hansen each had an RBI for PBR.

— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis continues competition on Friday at the Sioux Falls Christian Invite at Tomar Park in Sioux Falls. Action starts on Friday at 9:30 am.
— Mitchell Kernels soccer starts the season on Friday by hosting Huron. The girls match will be at 4 pm at Joe Quintal Field, followed by the boys match at 6 pm.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan has announced its 2026 Hall of Fame class, featuring five individuals and the 1992 football team. The team went 10-1, won the SDIC championship and made the only playoff appearance in school history. Individual inductees include baseball player Michael Lukkason, women’s basketball player Kim Dunn, football player Brady Bonte, wrestler Trever DeVestern and softball player Hailey Unger. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Sherman Center. The inductees will also be recognized at the Tigers’ Oct. 10 homecoming football game against Concordia.
— No. 16 ranked Dakota Wesleyan volleyball opens its season Friday at the Our Lady of the Lake Invite in San Antonio, Texas. The Tigers face Saint Francis (Ind.) at 9 a.m. and Montana Western at 5 p.m. Friday.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will play a pair of exhibition matches of the weekend starting on Friday at Gillette College at 3 pm. The Tigers will host Iowa Lakes Community College on Sunday at 3 pm in Mitchell.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will play at Black Hills State on Saturday in 11 am in an exhibition match.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer opened its season on Thursday with a 6-0 win over Manitoba on Thursday. The Jackrabbits had five first half goals and six different goal scorers overall. SDSU hosts MSU Moorhead on Sunday at 1 pm.
— South Dakota State and Green Bay will meet in men’s college basketball Dec. 21 at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls. The game time and ticket information will be announced later. It will be the seventh straight season SDSU has played at the Pentagon. Green Bay went 18-15 last season and reached the second round of the Horizon League Tournament under head coach Doug Gottlieb. Green Bay is 3-0 all-time against SDSU, with the teams last meeting in 2007.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s soccer returns to action Sunday at Nebraska. Kickoff is at 1:05 p.m. in Lincoln. The Coyotes opened the season on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory at Northern Iowa.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— Kyle Schwarber hit two home runs into the corn behind right field to stretch his major league -leading total to 37, as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Thursday night in the first game at the Field of Dreams movie site in four years. Brandon Marsh added a two-run homer in the seventh. Luke Keaschall homered in the second inning for Minnesota and reached base three times. The Twins went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. The two teams have today off before returning for game two of their three game series at Target Field on Saturday night at 6:10 pm.
NFL
— The Chicago Bears are considering two sites in Hammond, Indiana, for a new stadium and could potentially combine them. The team has completed its review of the Lost Marsh site and is conducting due diligence on the Wolf Lake Terminal site. Bears President Kevin Warren says the team’s focus is now on developing a world-class stadium and mixed-use project in Hammond. The Bears shifted their attention to Indiana after efforts to secure financial incentives for a new stadium in Illinois stalled. The team will remain the Chicago Bears regardless of where it builds. The Bears’ lease at Soldier Field runs through 2033.
— The Seattle Seahawks are working on a contract with cornerback Terrion Arnold. The 23-year-old faces eight felony charges in Florida stemming from allegations that he arranged the abduction and beating of three men in February. Arnold denies the allegations. The Detroit Lions released him in June, shortly after the charges were filed. Arnold was the 24th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He visited Seattle on Sunday.
— Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has sent LSU a cease-and-desist letter over the school’s decision to give his No. 5 jersey to current cornerback D.J. Pickett. Daniels, LSU’s 2023 Heisman Trophy winner, does not want the school using his name, image and likeness in connection with the number. His representative says Daniels believed his jersey number would not be given to another player. Pickett, a former five-star recruit, wore No. 3 last season but will wear No. 5 this year. LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said Pickett was promised the number when he committed to LSU in 2024. The No. 5 jersey was not officially retired after Daniels left LSU.
NASCAR
— Ty Gibbs will drive an M&M’s-themed car honoring Kyle Busch during next month’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch’s widow, Samantha, announced Thursday that the multicolored No. 54 car will pay tribute to the paint scheme Busch made famous during his career with Joe Gibbs Racing. Busch died May 21 at age 41 after severe pneumonia progressed to sepsis. The Bristol race is Sept. 19.

— Jake Bauers delivered the Brewers’ third RBI single of the ninth inning with two outs as Milwaukee rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles entered the ninth with a 4-2 lead, but Edwin Diaz gave up four straight one-out singles, including run-scoring hits by Jackson Chourio and Garrett Mitchell. Diaz has blown saves in three of his last four appearances.
— Pittsburgh’s Braxton Ashcraft threw a complete-game three-hitter, while Rafael Flores had a pair of three-run homers as the Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 13-1. Ashcraft struck out 10 and walked one in his 85-pitch outing.
— Cade Cavalli took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 to avoid a three-game sweep. Michael Busch delivered the Cubs’ lone hit with an opposite-field bloop single to left with two outs in the seventh. Cavalli retired the first 15 batters before walking Dansby Swanson to open the sixth.
— Red Sox rookie Payton Tolle allowed two hits over eight innings, while Caleb Durbin hit a grand slam as the Boston Red Sox ended a five-game losing streak with a 7-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
— Seattle’s Logan Gilbert pitched six innings and combined with three relievers on a four-hitter as the Mariners ended a six-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the New York Yankees.
— Sal Stewart, Eugenio Suárez and Tyler Stephenson homered as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox 9-8. Stewart scored four times and Suárez drove in four runs as Cincinnati took the rubber game in the three-game series.
— Keider Montero pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning as the Detroit Tigers shutout the Cleveland Guardians 3-0 despite failing to record a strikeout. The Tigers became the first team to shutout an opponent without a strikeout since 2014.
— Walbert Ureña allowed two hits in six innings, while Mike Trout and Denzer Guzman led a 15-hit outburst with three singles and an RBI apiece as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 7-0.
