MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell senior Asher Dannenbring continued his strong start to the boys golf season on Thursday, winning the Huron Invite at Broadland Creek Golf Course. Dannenbring shot a 2-under-par 70, one stroke ahead of Elijah Larson of Yankton. Dannenbring recorded seven birdies, including one on the 392-yard, par-4 18th hole. Mitchell finished fifth among 12 teams with a score of 35-over par. Brandon Valley won the team title at 9-over, 11 strokes ahead of Yankton. Dannenbring also finished second individually on Tuesday at the Pierre Invitational. He won the two-day Warrior-Lynx Invite on Aug. 18. Mitchell Freshman Eli Konrad tied for 20th with a 9-over 81. The Kernels return to action Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Hub City Invite in Aberdeen. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. at Lee Park Golf Course.
— Mitchell Christian swept the individual titles at Thursday’s Mitchell Invitational cross country meet at Wild Oak Golf Course. In the boys race, defending Class B state champion Silas Holdeman won in 16 minutes, 13 seconds. Golden Eagles teammate Luke Mentele was second, followed by Sawyer Holdeman in third. Mitchell freshman Micah Bennett placed fourth. In the girls race, Mitchell Christian freshman Laura Nemec won the 5K in 20 minutes, 19 seconds. Teammate Amy Henderson finished fourth, while Mitchell’s Averi Gerfen was sixth. The Mitchell and Mitchell Christian teams return to action Sept. 4 at the Augustana Twilight meet in Sioux Falls.
— Mitchell volleyball starts its season on Friday at home vs. Sturgis at 5 pm. The Kernels will compete at the Huron Invite on Saturday with four matches on the schedule.
— Mitchell football starts its season on Friday at home vs. Brookings at 7 pm. The KORN Booth pregame show starts at 6 pm on KORN News Radio.
— Mitchell soccer is back in action on Tuesday at Pierre with the girls match at 4 pm, followed by the boys at 6 pm.
— Mitchell girls tennis continues competition at the Rapid City Invitational on Thursday at 8 am. The Kernels lost to Rapid City Stevens 8-1 on Thursday to fall to 7-3 in duals.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer is back in action on Friday at Nebraska Wesleyan at 7 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will be at Bellevue (Neb.) on Saturday at 4:30 pm.
— Dakota Wesleyan football starts its season on Saturday at Dakota State at 7 pm.
— No. 16 ranked Dakota Wesleyan volleyball will play Sept. 4-5 at the Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Nebraska. The Tigers are 8-1 on the season after a 3-1 win at Dakota State on Wednesday.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s soccer defeated Western Illinois 5-0, holding the Leathernecks to one shot on goal Thursday night. SDSU improves to 4-1 on the season. The Jacks host Colorado College on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State volleyball starts its season on Friday vs. Sacramento State at 5 pm CST. The Jackrabbits will play three matches as part of the Pepperdine Tournament. SDSU plays the host Pepperdine on Saturday at 7 pm CST, followed by Villanova on Sunday at Noon CST.
— South Dakota State football starts its season on Saturday vs. Stetson at 6 pm. The Jackrabbit pregame show starts at 4 pm on KORN News Radio.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s soccer played Northern Colorado to a 0-0 tied on Thursday night to move to 2-1-2 on the season. The Coyotes will be at Wyoming on Sunday at 11:30 am.
— USD volleyball starts its season on Friday at the Drake Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, facing the host Drake at 6 pm. The Coyotes take on Milwaukee on Saturday at 3 pm, followed by DePaul on Sunday at 11 am.
— USD football starts its season on Saturday vs. Central Connecticut State at 1 pm.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Minnesota Twins are calling up top prospect Walker Jenkins from Triple-A St. Paul following an ongoing hip injury to Byron Buxton. Jenkins, the fifth overall pick in the 2023 draft, is hitting .308 with 12 home runs and 17 steals in 69 games with the Saints, including eight homers over his last 15 games. The 21-year-old center fielder is expected to be added to the 40-man roster ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Chicago White Sox. Buxton was removed from Tuesday’s game after re-aggravating a hip issue that has bothered him for the past two months. The Minnesota Twins start a three game home series vs. the Chicago White Sox on Friday at 7:10 pm.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— A Texas judge has temporarily halted the Southeastern Conference’s new rule barring former professional players from returning to college competition. Dallas County Judge Martin Hoffman issued a temporary restraining order Thursday in a lawsuit involving over 40 athletes. The order halts the SEC rule passed just two days earlier and directs the NCAA to briefly reopen its transfer portal, allowing affected athletes a one-week window to sign with new schools. The ruling comes amid mounting legal challenges across the country over the NCAA’s updated five-year eligibility framework, which excluded players who exhausted their fourth year of college competition last spring.

— Min Woo Lee matched his career-best PGA Tour score Thursday with an 8-under par 62 to take a two-shot lead after the opening round of the season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta. Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, and Chris Gotterup sit two strokes back at 6-under 64. FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler leads a group three shots off the pace following an opening-round 65.
NFL
— Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs is facing misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property following a physical confrontation earlier this year. Brown County prosecutors announced the charges Thursday, stemming from a May 23 altercation with his girlfriend. Jacobs was initially arrested on five counts, including a felony charge of strangulation, though those were reduced. The NFL says it is monitoring the case, while Jacobs has continued participating in training camp.
— Three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Leonard Williams and the Seattle Seahawks have agreed on a three-year, $90 million contract extension that includes $56 million guaranteed. The 32-year-old Williams was a second-team AP All-Pro last season when he helped the Seahawks win the franchise’s second Super Bowl. Williams has 22 sacks in 2 ½ seasons with Seattle and 61 ½ sacks in an 11-year career spent with the Seahawks, Giants and Jets.
NBA
— Los Angeles Lakers controlling owner Jeanie Buss is asking a Los Angeles court to block a vote by her five siblings to sell the Buss family’s remaining shares in the team. Buss says the sale is not in the best interest of the family trust and claims two of her siblings violated their duties as co-trustees. The siblings voted to sell their stake as part of a deal that values the Lakers at $12.5 billion. Buss says she was not consulted about the decision and that the family trust should retain enough of its stake to maintain control and benefit from the team’s rising value.
— Free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga has agreed to a two-year, $12.4 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The deal includes a player option for the second season. Minnesota is expected to give the 23-year-old a chance to start at power forward alongside Anthony Edwards. Kuminga chose Minnesota over offers from the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers. He spent last season with the Atlanta Hawks after being traded by Golden State and averaged 13.7 points during Atlanta’s playoff series against New York.
TENNIS
— Serena and Venus Williams are teaming up again at the U.S. Open. The sisters received a wild card on Wednesday to play doubles at the tournament, where they have won two championships. The Williams sisters are 27-7 in nine U.S. Open doubles appearances and last played together in 2022. They have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals as a team. Serena returned to tennis this summer after a four-year absence. Meanwhile, Venus is also entered in the women’s singles tournament. The first round of women’s doubles begins Sept. 3.
GOLF
— LIV Golf is beginning to lay off employees as it prepares to operate without financial backing from Saudi Arabia. The league informed many employees their jobs will end in the first week of September. LIV did not say how many workers are affected, but some could be rehired if the league finalizes a deal with a new lead investor. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil says the league is scaling back operations as it works toward a new version of LIV Golf for 2027.
— Former PGA Tour winner Matt Gogel has been suspended for six months for violating the PGA Tour’s gambling policy. The PGA Tour said Wednesday that Gogel placed golf wagers in 2024 and 2025, but none were on tournaments he was playing in. Gogel called the betting an honest mistake and said the wagers were small and recreational. The 55-year-old Gogel is currently competing on the PGA Champions Tour. Gogel will be eligible to return on Feb. 22, 2027.
SOCCER
— European soccer governing body UEFA is expected to formally withdraw its threat to boycott FIFA competitions after receiving assurances that FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s proposed $20 billion private investment plan will not return. UEFA member federations are meeting Thursday in Monaco and are expected to end the boycott threat. That would allow six European teams to compete in the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, which begins Sept. 5 in Poland. The boycott threat came after Infantino proposed creating a FIFA commercial subsidiary that would include rights to events such as the World Cup. The plan drew strong opposition and was abandoned within four days.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
— The NCAA is giving college baseball teams the option to use an Automated Ball/Strike system next season in all three divisions. The experimental system will allow batters, catchers and pitchers to challenge called balls and strikes when the technology is available. The SEC tested the system during its conference tournament in May. The NCAA is also permitting 18-inch bases, while 15-inch bases remain standard, and a double first base will be required. Division I will add a 30-second timer between batters, during mound visits and offensive timeouts.
MLB
— Major League Baseball has submitted a sweeping new proposal to alter its offseason landscape, presenting a plan to limit free-agent signings to specific calendar windows in December and February. Under the league’s proposal, free-agent deals would be restricted to several weeks in December before shutting down, only to reopen again in early February ahead of spring training. The system would also institute a total trade ban during the interim period, aimed at creating a concentrated flurry of offseason activity similar to the NFL and NBA. However, the league has explicitly tied the signing windows to the adoption of a controversial salary cap and floor system, capping team spending in 2027 at $245 million while setting a $171 million floor. The proposal would also cap free-agent contracts at 265 million dollars over six years.
— The Tampa City Council has approved a $2.3 billion deal to build a new ballpark for the Tampa Bay Rays. The 4-to-3 vote authorizes $967 million in public funding toward the stadium and entertainment district, which will be built on the Hillsborough College campus next to the Yankees’ spring training complex. Hillsborough County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on the project Friday morning. If final approvals clear, the team hopes to open the new stadium within three years.

— Chris Sale struck out 11 in a five-hit shutout, while Drake Baldwin hit a leadoff homer as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep. Sale lowered his ERA to 2.06 with his first complete game in more than seven years.
— Jackson Chourio went 4 for 5 with two homers, four RBIs and four runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 8-2. Jacob Misiorowski improved to 14-5 on the season, allowing two runs on two hits with six strikeouts over six innings.
— Christian Walker had three hits, including a two-run homer off Gerrit Cole in the sixth inning, and Jeremy Peña added a solo shot to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees. Houston (67-67) took two of three at Yankee Stadium and leads the AL West by one game over Texas.
— Jac Caglianone had a homer among his career-best five hits and finished with a career-high six RBIs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 13-2. The Blue Jays are 3 ½ games behind Cleveland in the race for the final American League wild-card spot. The Royals took two of three in the series, have won 10 of their last 11 games and four consecutive series.
— Drew Gilbert homered and drove in the go-ahead run as the San Francisco Giants beat Arizona 6-1. Arizona is 1 1/2 games behind San Diego for the final National League wild card spot.
— Blaze Jordan and Ramón Urías homered early to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-5, snapping a five-game losing streak.
