MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Kernels basketball hosts Rapid City Stevens for a doubleheader at the Corn Palace on Friday night. The girls game starts at 6 pm, followed by the boys at 7:30 pm. Coverage starts with the pregame show on KORN News Radio at 5:45 pm.

— Mitchell boys wrestling lost a home dual to Huron on Thursday night 41-40, while the Mitchell girls lost 42-28. The Mitchell boys (1-5) will compete at the Sioux Falls Washington Invitational on Saturday, while the Kernel girls travel to Canton for the Battle for the Paddle, also on Saturday. Both teams will return for a home dual against Aberdeen Central on Dec. 30.

— The latest Class A wrestling Dakota Grappler rankings for Mitchell.

— Mitchell Kernels gymnastics will host the Jill McCormick Invitational on Saturday at 11 am at the high school gym with 15 teams scheduled to compete.

DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— No. 10 Dakota Wesleyan women’s basketball defeated Providence (Mont.) 58-40 on Thursday in Hawaii to improve to 8-4 on the season. The Tigers will face No. 3 Campbellsville (Kent.) on Friday at 5:15 pm.

— Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball will be at Valley City State on Saturday at 2 pm.

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State women’s basketball lost at Duke on Thursday night 97-54 to fall to 10-3 on the season. Brooklyn Meyer scored 27 points to lead all players. The senior was the only Jackrabbit to reach double figures. She shot 11-of-15 from the floor. SDSU ends their non-conference schedule on Sunday when they host No.2 Texas at 1 pm on CBS Sports Network.

— South Dakota State men’s basketball will be at Milwaukee on Friday at 4 pm. SDSU wraps up their non-conference schedule at No. 1 Arizona on Monday at 8 pm CST.

SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD women’s basketball picked up a 71-44 win on Thursday vs. Texas-Rio Grand Valley. Angelina Robles led the way with 24 points and four three-pointers. The Coyotes return home to face the College of St. Mary (Neb.) on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 2 pm.

— USD men’s basketball will be at Kansas State on Saturday at 11 am.

NASCAR
— Federal investigators will begin sifting through the wreckage of a business jet that crashed in North Carolina and killed all seven people aboard, including retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family. Investigators will examine the crash site of the Cessna C550 at Statesville Regional Airport, north of Charlotte. Records show the plane was registered to a company run by Biffle. The cause of Thursday’s crash wasn’t immediately known, nor was the reason for the plane’s return to the airport in drizzle and cloudy conditions. The 55-year-old Biffle won more than 50 races across NASCAR’s three circuits.

NFL
— The Seattle Seahawks rallied to stun the Los Angeles Rams and take a one-game lead in the NFC West. Sam Darnold connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a touchdown in overtime, then hit a wide-open Eric Saubert for the winning 2-point conversion as the Seahawks beat the Rams 38-37. Seattle overcame a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit. The Seahawks went 3 for 3 on 2-point conversions. Matthew Stafford threw for 457 yards and three touchdowns for the Rams, and Puka Nacua had 225 yards receiving and two scores. The Seahawks are 12-3. They clinched a playoff spot and moved into position for the top seed in the NFC.

WNBA
— The WNBA players have authorized their union’s executive council to call a strike if necessary. That’s according to an announcement Thursday by the WNBPA. The union and league have been negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement for the past few months, extending the deadline a couple of times with the latest one set to expire Jan. 9. This move gives union negotiators another tool to use in talks. The union said there was overwhelming support in the vote to allow the executive council to call for a strike when it sees fit. Players and owners have been negotiating regularly.
