Dimock/Emery 3, Mitchell 2 (11 inn.) – Sam Pischke with a game winning single in the 11th inning. Josh Enquist went nine innings, allowing two runs with seven strikeouts. Mitchell’s Peyton Mandel threw 10 innings and 172 pitches.

Chamberlain 3, Wessington Springs 2 – Dakota Munger with four hits and a solo HR in the 6th inning. He also allowed one earned run over 9 innings with eight strikeouts. Wessington Springs Parker DeJean had 17 strikeouts over nine innings.

MITCHELL KERNELS
— Mitchell Baseball Association representatives met privately Thursday with the South Dakota American Legion Athletic Commission in Pierre to discuss reinstating the Post 18 Legion baseball program. No decision was made, and there is currently no timeline for when one will come. The Mitchell Legion team has been off the field since 2023, following criminal charges involving player.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State junior Cody Larson competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase semifinal at the NCAA Track Nationals in Eugene, Oregon on Wednesday. Larson was in position to qualify for the final but hit a hurdle and was unable to finish the race. Larson’s year included breaking three school records, including the 5000-meter, steeplechase, and a 50-year-old distance medley relay record.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— At the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USD women’s pole vaulters Gen Hirata and Anna Willis earned First Team All-American honors. Hirata claimed her sixth all-American honor, tying a school record, with a season-best vault of 14 feet, 6¾ inches to place seventh. Freshman Anna Willis earned her first all-American honor by tying for fourth place with the same height. Senior Sara Reifenrath earned honorable mention in the 400-meter dash, finishing 20th.
— USD senior Tre Young placed 18th in the men’s pole vault to earn honorable mention all-American honors. Young cleared 17 feet on his first try and made it to 17-5 before exiting at 17-9.
MINNESOTA TWINS
— The Texas Rangers set a season high with six home runs defeated the Minnesota Twins 16-3. Josh Smith, Jake Burger, and Wyatt Langford all went deep early, with Evan Carter, Adolis Garcia, and Sam Haggerty adding homers later. Bailey Ober gave up seven runs and four homers in just under five innings. The Twins start a three-game series at Houston tonight at 7:10 pm.

STANLEY CUP FINALS
Edmonton Oilers 5, Florida Panthers (OT) – Series is tied at 2-2 – Edmonton overcame a 3-0 deficit late in the second period. Florida forced overtime with a goal with 20 seconds left in regulation.
GOLF
— J.J. Spaun is the U.S. Open leader after a bogey-free first round of 66 that matches the lowest opening round for a U.S. Open at Oakmont. He leads by one over Thriston Lawrence. Brooks Koepka is back in the major mix with a 68. So is Jon Rahm at 69. They were among 10 players to break par. Scottie Scheffler made five bogeys in his round of 73. Rory McIlroy shot a 41 on his second nine and shot 74.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Minnesota women’s basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit has signed a two-year contract extension, approved Thursday by the university’s board of regents. Plitzuweit is 47-29 over two seasons and led the Gophers to a WNIT championship last year. The new deal runs through 2031 and includes a raise to a $900,000 base salary for next season.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
— Wisconsin’s football program has been placed on one year of probation and fined $25,000 after an NCAA investigation found nine coaches and staff made impermissible calls to recruits in 2023. Former coaches Greg Scruggs and Max Stienecker received one-year show cause orders. Head coach Luke Fickell and another coach were temporarily banned from recruiting communications. The NCAA classified the violations as Level Two, with Wisconsin self-reporting and cooperating fully.
NASCAR
— Denny Hamlin will miss Sunday’s NASCAR race in Mexico City, the sport’s first international event of the modern era, to stay home following the birth of his son. Ryan Truex will fill in for Hamlin. Hamlin posted on social media that family is his priority right now and plans to return at Pocono. Despite missing this race, Hamlin remains third in the Cup Series standings and will seek a waiver to stay playoff-eligible.
MLB
— Cincinnati Reds pitcher Wade Miley has been named in court documents as a drug supplier to the late Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who died of an accidental overdose in 2019. The accusation comes in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Skaggs’ family. Skaggs’ former agent testified that Miley provided him with oxycodone pain pills back in 2013. Miley is not facing criminal charges and has yet to comment. Miley, who signed with Cincinnati earlier this month after recovering from Tommy John surgery, has made two starts this season.

— In his Major League debut, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski dominated the St. Louis Cardinals with five no-hit innings before leaving the game after twisting his ankle. Misiorowski struck out five batters and reached 102 mph on his fastball. The Brewers went on to shutout the Cardinals 6-0, with a five-run fifth inning.
— The Yankees Pablo Reyes stumbled, stopped and still scrambled home safely on a wild play in the eighth inning, taking advantage of a throwing error by reliever Lucas Erceg to give New York a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
— Tarik Skubal pitched seven shutout innings and Parker Meadows hit a three-run homer as the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1. Skubal allowed just three hits and struck out six, lowering his ERA to under two.
— Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki each hit home runs in the Chicago Cubs 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cubs starter Jameson Taillon, pitching against his former team, allowed two runs over six-plus innings with seven strikeouts.
— The Mets Kodai Senga left with a hamstring strain after 5 2/3 scoreless innings as New York held on for a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals, completing a three-game sweep. Jeff McNeil hit a three-run homer in the first, and Brandon Nimmo added a solo shot. Senga’s ERA now leads the majors at 1.47 but he’ll be placed on the injured list. The Mets improve to an MLB-best 45-24.
— Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer and Jose Altuve doubled twice and had two RBIs to lead the Houston Astros over the Chicago White Sox 4-3.
— The Rockies Orlando Arcia delivered a two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning to rally Colorado to an 8-7 win over the San Francisco Giants, snapping a five-game losing streak. The Rockies overcame a 7-2 deficit in the sixth inning.

— Mitchell will host a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) football camp on Wednesday, June 25th from 9 am to 3 pm at Joe Quintal Field. Camp is for players entering grades 5-8 this fall and the cost is $20.
