— Mitchell Kernels girls tennis sits in fourth place after the first day of the Class AA State Tournament in Sioux Falls. The Kernels have accumulated 247.5 points, with Rapid City Stevens in the lead with 276 points. Harrisburg is a close second at 266 points and Sioux Falls Lincoln is in third place with 265 points.

— Mitchell Kernels football has its final road game of the season on Friday when they take on Brandon Valley at 6 pm.
— Mitchell Kernels volleyball, 9-4 on the season, will host Rapid City Central on Friday at 6:30 pm. The Kernels have won a season best three matches in row. A win on Friday night would give Mitchell their longest winning streak in four years.
DAKOTA WESLEYAN
— Dakota Wesleyan volleyball will be at Doane on Friday at 7:30 pm. The Tigers are 10-8 on the season and 4-4 in the GPAC. They are currently tied with the College of St. Mary in fifth place in the conference, just one game behind fourth place Dordt.
— Dakota Wesleyan football hosts No. 4 Morningside next Saturday at 1 pm. The Tigers are coming off their second win of the season last week, a 33-7 road victory at Dordt. Quarterback Jed Jenson threw for 306 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. Morningside is 4-1 on the season and 4-0 in the GPAC with their lone loss coming at No. 3 Benedictine (Kansas.) in their season opener. The Mustangs put up a season-high 69 points in a 63-point homecoming win over Waldorf last week, as QB Zach Chevalier completed 17-of-18 for 327 yards and five touchdowns. In all, Morningside gained 651 yards of total offense, including have a 49-0 lead by halftime.
— Dakota Wesleyan men’s soccer will be at Midland on Saturday at 5 pm. The Tigers have only lost one of their past six matches and currently sit in third place in the GPAC with a 3-1-1 conference record.
— Dakota Wesleyan women’s soccer will be at Midland on Saturday at 7:30 pm. The Tigers have played to a tie in six of their 10 matches this season. They are currently 2-2-6 on the year and 1-1-3 in the conference.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
— South Dakota State volleyball swept Kansas City on Thursday 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-18). The Jackrabbits improved to 10-3 on the season and 4-0 in the Summit League. Sylvie Zgonc finished with 11 kills, while setter Rylee Martin had 34 assists. It was also the Jackrabbits 1,000th volleyball win in school history. SDSU hosts St. Thomas on Saturday night at 7 pm.
— South Dakota State women’s soccer lost at Denver on Thursday night 1-0 to end the Jackrabbits 11 match unbeaten streak. SDSU, 8-2-4 on the season, host Omaha on Sunday at 1 pm.
— South Dakota State football returns home on Saturday to face Northern Iowa at 2 pm on Hobo Day. The Jackrabbits are coming off a 35-30 win at Youngstown State last Saturday to open Missouri Valley Football Conference play. SDSU has won 32 consecutive games at home and is tied with North Dakota State (2017-20) for the fourth-longest streak in FCS history. The Jacks were ranked No. 2 this week in the FCS National Poll and are 5-0 on the season. Meanwhile, Northern Iowa is 2-3 on the season, coming off a 35-7 loss vs. North Dakota last week. Home-field advantage has meant little in the recent series as the road team has won nine of the last 13 meetings dating back to 2014.
SOUTH DAKOTA
— USD volleyball picked up a 3-1 (25-22,18-25, 25-21, 25-19) win over St. Thomas on Thursday. Lauren Medeck and Morgan Bode led the Coyotes with 15 kills, while Avery Van Hook added 44 assists. USD improved to 10-6 on the season and 2-2 in the Summit League. The Coyotes will be at Omaha on Saturday at Noon.
— USD women’s soccer played to a 1-1 tie on Thursday at Kansas City to move to 6-3-5 on the season. The Coyotes will be at Oral Roberts on Sunday at 1 pm.
— USD football will be at Indiana State on Saturday at Noon. The Coyotes look to be above .500 for the first time this season with a win as they enter the game with a 3-3 record. Last week, USD defeated Murray State on homecoming 49-24 behind 244 rushing yards and four touchdowns from L.J. Phillips Jr.

— Phillies RP Orion Kerkering made a wild throw past home instead of tossing to first after mishandling Andy Pages’ bases-loaded comebacker with two outs in the 11th inning, as the Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 to win their NL Division Series 3-1. L.A. starter Tyler Glasnow threw six shutout innings, allowing only two hits with eight strikeouts. Phillies starter Christopher Sanchez allowed just one run over 6 1/3 inning.
— Ian Happ connected for a three-run homer in the first inning, sending Chicago to a 6-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers that pushed their NL Division Series to a decisive Game 5. Chicago became the first team in major league history with a first-inning homer in four straight games during one postseason. Matthew Boyd went 4 2/3 shutout innings for the Cubs, allowing two hits with six strikeouts.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Sister Jean, the beloved chaplain for the Loyola Chicago’s men’s basketball team, has died at 106. The university announced her death on Thursday night. She became a celebrity during the team’s 2018 Final Four run. Health issues led her to step down in August, but she remained an adviser.
NBA
— LeBron James will miss opening night of his record 23rd NBA season due to pain in his sciatic nerve that will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks. The 40-year-old James will be sidelined at least until the end of October. James has yet to participate in a full practice since the Lakers opened training camp.
— NBA general managers overwhelmingly expect Oklahoma City to be the league’s first repeat champion in nearly a decade. Denver’s Nikola Jokic is their pick to reclaim the MVP award, and Miami’s Erik Spoelstra is the pick as best coach. Those were among the findings of the NBA’s annual preseason polling of general managers, the results of which were released Thursday. The Thunder got 80% of the vote in response to the question of which team would win this season’s title. No team has gone back-to-back since Golden State in 2017-18.
— Former NBA star Paul Pierce has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on a Los Angeles highway after he was found asleep behind the wheel. California state police arrested Pierce on Tuesday night after responding to an unrelated car crash on Highway 101. They saw a Range Rover SUV stopped in the road south of the crash and found Pierce asleep at the wheel. Officers conducted a DUI investigation and arrested him on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
MEDIA
— Fox and its related networks will televise next year’s World Baseball Classic, obtaining U.S. English and Spanish rights to the tournament. Seven games from the upcoming WBC, including the title game, will be aired on Fox.
NFL
— Cam Skattebo ran for three touchdowns as he and fellow rookie Jaxson Dart led the New York Giants to a 34-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Dart had a 20-yard touchdown run and a 35-yard passing TD to Wan’Dale Robinson.
— Free agent WR Odell Beckham Jr. has accepted a six-game suspension from the NFL after he reportedly failed a performance-enhancing drug test last year. Beckham will not be eligible to play until Week 12. Beckham played nine games with the Miami Dolphins last season, catching nine passes for 55 yards. Despite the news, the 10-year NFL veteran said he hopes to continue his career this season.
