COLLEGE BASKETBALL
— Virginia head basketball coach Tony Bennett has announced his sudden retirement, effective immediately, just before the start of the 2024-25 season. The 55-year-old Bennett led Virginia to a national championship in 2019 during a 15-year tenure that saw 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, two ACC Tournament titles, and six regular-season conference championships. Known for his defensive, slow-tempo approach, Bennett’s was a two-time AP National Coach of the Year. Bennett’s career at Virginia was marked by a significant high in 2019, when the Cavaliers won their first NCAA title, and a low in 2018, when the team became the first No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed in the tournament. His decision to retire comes just months after signing a contract extension through 2030 and was announced just a week after his appearance at the ACC’s preseason media days.
NFL
— Javonte Williams rushed for two touchdowns as the Denver Broncos won in coach Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans, beating the Saints 33-10. Bo Nix passed for 164 yards and ran for 75 yards for Denver. The Broncos outgained New Orleans 389 yards to 271 while sending the Saints to their fifth straight loss. The Saints fell to 2-5, while the Broncos improved to 4-3.
— The Cleveland Browns officially announced plans Thursday to leave their 25-year-old stadium on the shores of Lake Erie when the lease expires in 2028 and move to a domed facility in the suburbs despite the city’s efforts to keep it in Cleveland. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb met Wednesday with owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam, who told him they were moving forward with their intention to build the $2.4 billion facility and entertainment complex 12 miles south of downtown Cleveland.
NBA
— Kawhi Leonard won’t play for the Los Angeles Clippers to start the season because of ongoing rehabilitation from inflammation in his right knee. Leonard will be sidelined indefinitely. He hasn’t played during the preseason, which concluded last night at home against Sacramento. The two-time Finals MVP also hasn’t been involved in on-court contact during training camp. Leonard had said at the start of training camp that he would be in the starting lineup on opening night if his knee cooperated.
COLLEGE
— Mountain West Conference commissioner Gloria Nevarez expressed deep concern over the recent forfeitures by women’s volleyball teams to avoid playing San Jose State, stating it reflects poorly on college athletics. Four teams, Boise State, Southern Utah, Utah State, and Wyoming have canceled matches against San Jose State, though they did not explicitly state their reasons. A group of Nevada players announced they would not play against SJSU on Oct. 26, citing concerns for “safety and fair competition.” However, the university confirmed the match would still occur.
