Jackrabbits Roll Past Kansas City

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State rolled to its 13th consecutive win Thursday – a 74-53 victory over Kansas City at Frost Arena. Brooklyn Meyer led four Jackrabbits in double figures with a 25-point night.

Meyer’s total contribution came on 9-of-13 shooting and a 7-for11 mark from the free throw line. She also tallied seven rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Paige Meyer followed with 12 points, then Madison Mathiowetz with 11 and Tori Nelson with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Nelson’s double-double is her second in as many games. She also had a team-high four assists.

Ellie Colbeck contributed eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Mesa Byom added six points and three boards. Freshman Jenna Hopp was held to two points off the bench but recorded career-highs with six rebounds and three steals.

The Jacks jumped to a 23-11 lead over the opening 10 minutes behind an 11-point quarter from Brooklyn Meyer. The sides were held to a combined 22 points in the second quarter and the Jacks led 35-21 at halftime. SDSU went up by as many as 18 in the third and led by 16 with 10 minutes left to play. A 17-3 run to start the final period pushed the Jacks ahead 30 before KC ended the contest with nine straight points.

Alayna Contreras scored 12 points to lead the Roos.

The Jackrabbits were 42 percent from the field and held the Roos to 36 percent shooting. SDSU committed a season-low seven turnovers while forcing 14 by Kansas City.

Tori Nelson’s 10 points moved her into 23rd place on South Dakota State’s all-time scoring chart. She also surpassed 500 career field goals and 300 career assists.
