Jacks Overcome Slow Start to Top Oral Roberts 89-71

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Despite a slow start, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team topped Oral Roberts 89-71 Saturday afternoon at First Bank & Trust Arena. The Jackrabbits remain unbeaten in Summit League action at 11-0.

The Jacks shot just 29 percent in the opening quarter, but finished the game 54 percent from the field and 68 percent from the 3-point line with 12 treys.

Paige Meyer put together one of her best games of the season. In 38 minutes on the floor, Meyer tallied 23 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals. She drew seven fouls, including two charge calls.

Brooklyn Meyer put up 20 points on an 8-of-9 effort from the floor and grabbed eight rebounds. Haleigh Timmer went 5-of-6 from the 3-point line and finished with 18 points and five rebounds.

Mesa Byom was also a big contributor for the Jacks. She was 4-of-6 on the day for nine points and posted 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Katie Vasecka scored seven points and dished four assists.

Oral Roberts opened the game with 3-pointers on three of its first four possessions to take a 9-0 lead in less than one minute. Following consecutive Brooklyn Meyer layups, ORU stretched its lead to 11 with a 6-0 run. The Golden Eagles led by 10, 24-14, after 10 minutes.

The Jacks flipped the script in the second quarter, rattling off 14 straight points over the first three minutes to take the lead. Timmer knocked down three 3-pointers during the run, which ended with the Jackrabbits up four at 28-24. ORU responded with 10 straight points, then SDSU finished the first half with 10 of the final 11 points and led 38-35 at the break.

Timmer hit another two triples during an 8-0 run in the third quarter, then Vasecka knocked down a trey that put the Jackrabbits ahead 57-43 at the 4:09 mark. The Golden Eagles were within six early in the final period but the Jackrabbits quickly made it a double-digit game with eight points from Paige Meyer during a 14-4 stretch. ORU did not score consecutive field goals during the fourth quarter as the Jacks pulled away for the 18-point win.

Oral Roberts got 21 points from both Taleyah Jones and Emily Robinson. Ruthie Udoumoh added 12 points and four steals. Jalei Oglesby, ORU’s leading scorer entering the day, was held to five points. She did lead the Golden Eagles on the glass with seven rebounds. Oral Roberts shot 38 percent for the game.
