Jacks Win League Title Outright with Sweep at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. – South Dakota State volleyball solidified the outright Summit League regular season title Tuesday night with a 3-0 sweep at South Dakota. The Jackrabbits wrap the regular season with a 26-1 overall record and 15-1 mark in conference play.

The Jackrabbits are the champions of the regular season for the first time since 2007. The victory is SDSU’s first in Vermillion since 2002. Set scores against the Coyotes went 25-16, 25-22, 25-20.

Four Jackrabbits hit above .300 for the contest, led by a .471 clip from Sydni Schetnan. The redshirt junior tallied nine kills with just one error in the match and contributed two block assists. Sylvie Zgonc led all players with 14 kills and hit .458, the third-highest single-,match hitting percentage of her career. Zgonc moves into a tie for third place on SDSU’s single-season kills chart with 442 in her sophomore campaign.

Madison Burr added eight kills while hitting .375 on the night. The freshman also posted two solo blocks and one block assist. Annalee Ventling-Brown had three kills and one error on six swings for a .333 hitting percentage.

As a team, SDSU hit .311, its third-highest hitting percentage of the season. The Jackrabbits posted a 75-58 advantage in kills despite having fewer total attacks than the Coyotes, 106-118.

Katie Van Egdom and Alyssa Groves added six and five kills, respectively, for SDSU. Joslyn Richardson tallied 15 digs to lead the Jackrabbit defense, followed by Zgonc with 14. Rachel Wieber and Camryn Honn had seven digs apiece. Rylee Martin gave out 21 assists while Honn had 15. Honn also recorded two ace serves.

Kylen Sealock and Lauren Medeck had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the Coyotes. Avery Van Hook tallied 29 assists and Kamryn Farris recorded 14 digs.

  • The last time SDSU swept USD was 2015 in Brookings. The last time SDSU swept USD in Vermillion was 2000.
  • Sylvie Zgonc is tied with Crystal Burk for third place on SDSU’s single-season kills chart for the current scoring era.
