Mitchell Kernels girls soccer fought through rainy conditions to defeat the No. 16 seed Brookings Bobcats 4-1 on Tuesday night to advance to the Class AA State Quarterfinals.
After thunderstorms delayed the start of the match by over an hour, the Kernels got off to a quick start with a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the match on a Kenzi Kayl goal.
Less than five minutes later, the Kernels would make it 2-0 on a Mia Mullenmeister goal.
Brookings only goal came with just over minute left in the half to cut the Mitchell lead to 2-1.
The Kernels would put the game away with two second half goals, both from Mullenmeister, to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals. Mitchell will host No. 8 seed Pierre at 11 am at Joe Quintal Field.
The Kernels shutout Pierre 5-0 in Mitchell on September 16.
