Mitchell boys tennis sits in eighth place after the first day of the Class AA state tennis tournament in Sioux Falls.
In #1 Singles, Luke Jerke reached the consolation finals going 1-1 on the day. He will face Curtis Sneden of Watertown for ninth place.
Jager Juracek will play for sixth place at #2 Singles after defeating Tristan Eizinger of Rapid City Stevens in the first round 4-6, 6-3, (10-7).
Levi Loken had a 1-1 day that sets him up to take on Dawson McCaulley of Sioux Falls Jefferson for ninth place at #3 Singles. Loken defeated Boen McKee of Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the consultation semifinals 10-3.
In #4 Singles, Drake Jerke won his opening round match against Jack Riggs of Aberdeen Central 6-4, 4-6, (12-10). Jerke faces Owen Boyd of Sioux Falls Washington with the winner advancing to the fifth place final.
#5 seed Matthew Mauszycki went 2-0 on the day at #5 Singles defeating Xavier St. Pierre of Brookings 6-0, 6-1 in the first round before taking down the #4 seed Lucas Fogarty of Brandon Valley 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. Mauszycki plays #1 seed Christopher Tao of Sioux Falls Lincoln for a spot in tomorrow’s final.
Zach Fuhrer will play for fifth place tomorrow at #6 Singles going 2-1 on the day. Fuhrer will face #7 seed Aidan Rockvam of Harrisburg for fifth.
In Doubles competition, the Kernels were led by its #3 Doubles team of Mauszycki and Fuhrer. The #5 seed for Mitchell will play for third place tomorrow vs. the #2 seed from O’Gorman.
Mitchell’s #2 Doubles team of Drake Jerke and Levi Loken went 1-1 on the day, winning their opening round match 10-1. They will play tomorrow for a spot in the fifth place finals.
At #1 Doubles, Luke Jerke and Jager Juracek lost their first round match to the #7 seed from Brandon Valley 10-5. Jerke and Juracek received a bye into the consolation semifinals.
The state tournament wraps up Friday with competition starting at 8 am in Sioux Falls.
