Larson Ends Season at NCAA’s

EUGENE, ORE. — South Dakota State’s Cody Larson wraps up his junior season at the NCAA Track Nationals on Wednesday night.

HEAD COACH ROD DEHAVEN

“Today caps off a great season, although it was not the result we were looking for. Cody competed with a lot of pride and was right in it. Unfortunately, he hit a hurdle right before two kilometers and hit the track pretty hard, and wasn’t able to finish. He still represented the Jackrabbits very well, and he can be extremely proud of his effort today.”

LARSON’S PERFORMANCE

Larson qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase semifinal held in Eugene, Ore., after finishing second in the quarterfinals at the NCAA West First Round. The junior competed admirably and was well set up to compete for a qualifying spot entering into the final two laps of the race, however, he was tripped up by a hurdle and unable to complete the competition.

Larson’s Eugene debut capped off an extraordinary season for the junior as he managed to rewrite three Jackrabbit records. Larson opened his season with a program record in the 5000-meter at 13:42.82. Next, he posted a 3000-meter steeplechase time of 8:30.96 to best the program record by 12 seconds. Lastly, Larson assisted in breaking SDSU’s 50-year-old distance medley relay record at the Drake Relays. The junior held off in-state rival University of South Dakota and track and field powerhouse Iowa State University in the final 200 meters of the race to win the event at 9:37.05.
