Mitchell native Jill (Theeler) Schlekeway is one of eight individuals that will be inducted into North Dakota State University’s Bison Athletic Hall of Fame in October. A 19-time All-American, Schlekeway was also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, MVP multiple times of the NCC indoor and outdoor championships, and a member of the 2002 National Champion track & field team. Schlekeway was named to the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame in 2015, joining her father, Jack, who was inducted in 2014. Tickets to the ceremony will go on sale in September.
Dakota Wesleyan University announced the hiring of Luis Pulido as the new head men’s soccer coach Wednesday. Pulido becomes the sixth head coach in DWU men’s soccer history after serving as the assistant coach for DWU in 2019. From 2015-2019, Pulido was the girl’s head soccer coach for Columbus High School in Columbus, Neb. During the 2017-2018 season he spent two seasons at Central Community College. The 2020 DWU men’s soccer conference season is set to kick off at home against Hastings College at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
The Mitchell Junior Legion baseball team split a doubleheader with Sioux Falls East yesterday. Mitchell could not overcome five errors and lost game one 6-3. Landon Waddell threw six and one-third and allowed just five hits while striking out seven. Brandon Sparks had two of Mitchell’s five hits. In game two, Mitchell took the lead by scoring five times in the third inning and held on for a 9-7 win to get the split. Jace Larson pitched six innings and struck out seven. Jack Vermeulen had two RBIs for Mitchell who improved to 19-9 on the season, plays two games at Brandon Valley Friday beginning at 5 p.m.
Mitchell Post 18 (16-15) is scheduled to play six games over the weekend in the Veterans Classic in Rapid City. Two of the games are against in-state opponents and will factor in the seeding for the postseason. Mitchell opens the tournament Thursday, with a 9 p.m. Central game against Rapid City Post 320. Post 320 was in just behind Post 18 in 10th place in the latest standings released Monday. Mitchell also faces Sioux Falls East, a team just in front of Post 18 in eighth place, over the weekend. Mitchell will play two games Friday and Saturday and one game Sunday. The game on Sunday will be against an opponent from the opposite pool which includes Rapid City Post 22, Pierre, and Sioux Falls West.
Blake Moke had three hits and drove in five runs but it was not enough for Corsica-Stickney as Winner-Colome beat the Horned Frogs 7-5. Zach Harter struck out 10 over seven innings with Reed Harter, who also hit a two run, earned the save with five strikeouts over two innings. Nathan Blom struck out seven over eight innings and allowed just six hits in the loss.

The Summit League announced Tuesday that Northern Colorado’s baseball team will join the league starting with the 2021-22 academic year. It gives the league seven teams and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Northern Colorado made the move to the Division I level in 2005-06 and the Bears’ baseball team has played as a member of the Western Athletic Conference since 2014.
The sale of the former Huset’s Speedway near Brandon has been finalized. Todd Quiring, who also owns Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minnesota purchased the property from Chuck Brennan. Brennan purchased the track in 2015 and rebranded it as Badlands Motor Speedway. The first event under the new ownership will be held Sunday, August 2nd. The track has not hosted a race since 2017.
