The Dakota Wesleyan University’s women’s basketball team claimed a road victory at No. 13-ranked Northwestern College on Saturday afternoon 69-57. Jada Campbell had 16 points and seven rebounds while Matti Reiner had 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Lacey Sprakel had 10 points off the bench for DWU. The win is DWU’s 11th in a row and improved to 14-2 overall and 6-2 in GPAC competition. The Tigers host No. 23 Briar Cliff on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Corn Palace.
Playing its first game since December 11th, the DWU men were held to 21 points and 30 percent shooting in the first half in a 69-58 at Northwestern Saturday. The Tigers were led by Mason Larson’s 24 points with Sawyer Schultz adding 15 points. Koln Oppold had 10 points and six rebounds in the contest for DWU, which fell to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in the GPAC. The DWU men also face Briar Cliff Wednesday night.
The South Dakota State women’s basketball team overcame a cold first half to roll past North Dakota 72-54 Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena and move to 4-0 in the Summit League. The Jackrabbits shot 54 percent from the field in the second half and led by as many as 25 points in the win. Four Jackrabbits scored in double figures for the sixth time this season. Paiton Burckhard posted a season-high 15 points, leading the Jacks, to go with six rebounds and five assists. SDSU will travel to Vermillion to play South Dakota at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
South Dakota fifth-year senior Chloe Lamb dropped 27 points in the Coyotes’ 65-38 win over North Dakota State on Saturday afternoon inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. Lamb scored 22 of her 27 points in the first half, outscoring the Bison team on her own until early in the fourth quarter. South Dakota, now 11-4, 4-0 Summit, tallied its ninth-straight win.
Brooke Jarman scored three goals and assisted on a fourth to help the Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team rally from a two-goal deficit Sunday for a 4-3 home win over Oahe. Goalie Sadie Kludt made 16 saves for the victory. Mitchell began the weekend with an 8-0 road win Saturday over Brookings. Jarman had three goals and four assists in that win while Kludt stopped all 14 shots on goal she faced. Mitchell plays at Oahe on Friday followed by two games in Rapid City Saturday and Sunday.
The Marlin boys fell 8-1 to Brookings Saturday night. Tanner Puetz had the lone goal for Mitchell. Marlin boys host Huron on Friday.
The Mitchell Kernel boys’ basketball team, 4-1 on the season, will play two home games this week. Mitchell hosts Harrisburg Tuesday night followed by a doubleheader with the girls against Yankton on Friday. The Kernel girls, 1-4, are off until the doubleheader on Friday night.
Mitchell Wrestling, 7-3 in duals and 1-1 in ESD dual competition, will host Harrisburg and Yankton in a pair of home duals, Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. at MHS.
Mitchell Gymnastics (5-0) will be in Brookings Saturday to compete in the Patty Jorgenson Invitational starting at 11 a.m.
The SDSU men (12-4 overall and 3-0 in the Summit League) will face off against South Dakota on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. in Frost Arena.
