Local Sports for Friday February 7th, 2020

The Mitchell Kernel wrestling team went 1-1 in Salem at the Fighting Cougar Tri-Angular last night.  Mitchell beat Tri-Valley 73-6 to start the night and jumped on McCook Central/Montrose 21-9 early, only to see the Fighting Cougars string together five consecutive wins, four by fall to upset the Kernels 37-33.  Mitchell is now 10-4 in duals and took a bit of a hit in trying to secure a Top 8 seed to make the State Dual Tourney later this month.  Mitchell competes in the Yankton Invitational on Saturday starting at 9:00am at the Summit Activities Center.

 

It is no secret that the Howard Tiger boys’ basketball team is good, but when they drill eight 3-pointers and smothered the Mitchell Christian Golden Eagles on defense as the Tigers came away with a 56-21-win last night in Howard.  Howard finished with eight made 3-pointers, while the Golden Eagles finished with eight total made field goals in the game.  Howard led 18-5 at the end of the first-quarter lead and led 33-11 at halftime. The Tigers limited the Golden Eagles to just two points in the third quarter to punctuate the dominant defensive output.  Jens Enga recorded seven points and Joey Feiner scored six points for Mitchell Christian, 0-14 overall.  Howard, 12-4 overall, plays at Baltic on Tuesday while Mitchell Christian plays at Sunshine Bible Academy on Monday night.

 

The Howard Tiger girls’ basketball team exploded for 21 points in the third quarter, powering it to a 56-39 win over the Mitchell Christian girls’ basketball team last night in Howard.  The Tigers jumped out to an early 16-6 lead after the first quarter only to see the Golden Eagles tie it at halftime at 37.  The third quarter was the difference and Mitchell Christian could not make a comeback in the fourth quarter and fell to 4-10 overall.  Howard improved to 13-3 overall.  Audrey Hofer scored 14 points, Anna Cooper registered 13 points, seven rebounds and five steals in a losing cause.  Howard travels to Baltic on Tuesday while Mitchell Christian travels to Sunshine Bible Academy on Monday.

 

Senior Reggie Slaba of Hanson was feeling it last night as his Hanson Beavers rolled Mount Vernon/Plankinton 81-66 as Slaba erupted for a school-record 47 points.  Slaba drilled eight three points shots and broke the school record that has stood up since 1980 when Mark Thomas scored 45 for the Beavers.  The Beaver boys are now 13-3 and play Mitchell Christian on Thursday in Alexandria.

 

The next four games are at home for the Mitchell Kernel boys, 3-8 overall, in a time where the Kernels boys are playing good basketball and should have about seven wins already.  Right now, Mitchell is the #15 seed and will host #16 Sturgis tonight at 7:00pm, #12 Spearfish Saturday at 1:30pm, #3 Roosevelt next Thursday and host #13 Harrisburg on February 15th, all at the Palace.  Coverage tonight starts with the boys at 6:30pm and then switches out west for the girls on KORN News Radio FM 101.3, AM 1490 or on-line at kornradio.com.

 

The Mitchell Kernel girls’ basketball team, 6-7 overall, have two road games out west this weekend.  This weekend the #10 seeded Kernel girls will travel to #18 seed Sturgis tonight at 8:30pm and travel to #14 seed Spearfish on Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm Central Time in two must wins for the Kernel girls.  Next week the Kernel girls will host #3 Harrisburg at the Palace.

The Mitchell Kernel gymnastics team will compete at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet on Saturday in Harrisburg as their season comes to a close.  Action on Saturday starts at Noon.  After this weekend the State Gymnastics Meet will be held in Aberdeen on February 14th and 15th.

 

It will be a busy and important weekend for the DWU Tiger men and women as they host Morningside at the Palace.  The #13 ranked Tiger women, 17-8 overall and 10-7 in the GPAC, will host #7 Morningside at 4:00pm Saturday on Alumni Day as well.  The #10 ranked Tiger men, 18-6 overall and 10-5 in the conference, host top ranked Morningside at 6:00pm Saturday night at the Corn Palace.  After Saturday the Tiger men and women will be in Yankton on Wednesday at Mount Marty.  Five games remain in the regular season for the Tiger basketball teams.

 

The South Dakota State women’s basketball, 17-7 overall and 9-1 in the Summit League, returns home to host Omaha on Saturday as part of a doubleheader with the Jackrabbit men. The women will tipoff at 2:00pm at Frost Arena in Brookings on Saturday.

 

The South Dakota State men’s basketball, 17-8 overall and 8-2 in the Summit League, will host Omaha for the 2020 Pork Classic on Saturday. The doubleheader at Frost Arena gets underway with the women’s game at 2:00pm followed by the men’s contest at 4:15pm Saturday at Frost Arena in Brookings.

 

The USD Coyote women, 21-2 overall and 10-0 in the Summit League, finishes off its stretch of three-straight road games when they head to the University of North Dakota on Sunday at 2:00pm in Grand Forks.

 

The USD Coyote men, 17-8 overall and 7-3 in the Summit, are back on the road Saturday afternoon traveling to the University of North Dakota.  Tip-off time slated for 2:00pm.
