Local Sports for Wednesday December 11th

Congrats to five area Class A volleyball players for being named Class A All-State Volleyball this season.  Named to the First Team was Abby Brunsing, Junior outside hitter from Wagner.  Named Second Team All-State was Emily Bies, Senior setter from McCook Central/Montrose.  Named Honorable Mention Class A All-State Volleyball were Aleah Ries, Senior outside hitter from McCook Central/Montrose and Abigail Van Ruler, Senior middle hitter of McCook Central/Montrose and Lizzie Tyler, Freshman setter of Wagner.  The Class AA All-State Volleyball selections will be announced Thursday.

 

Behind multiple first-place winners, the Mitchell Kernel gymnastics team captured first at its home triangular last night at the MEGA Gymnastics Center.  The Kernels finished with 146.300 points, while Sioux Falls Lincoln took second with 137.950 points and Yankton finished 134.750 and in third place.  Mitchell had three gymnasts finish first through third in the all-around standings. Kyra Gropper was the all-around winner, while also scoring top marks in bars (9.200) and vault (9.550). She also placed second in beam (8.950) and floor (9.300).  Emily Moody and Alyssa Hughes finished second and third, respectively, in the all-around.  The Kernels will compete at the Aberdeen Central Invitational on Saturday starting at 10:00am.  The Kernels host their own Jill McCormick/Mitchell Invite on December 20th and 21st at the Senior High School.

 

South Dakota State men’s basketball was dealt a heartbreaker late last night at Colorado State, falling 72-68 in a tightly-contest matchup at Moby Arena.  The Jackrabbits and Rams traded punches throughout the game with 10 ties and 15 lead changes, including two inside the final minute of action.  Douglas Wilson led the Jackrabbit offense with 15 points, going 7-of-10 from the field alongside five rebounds. Noah Freidel, 12 points, and Alex Arians 10 points were in double-figure scoring as well.  Freidel matched Matt Dentlinger for the team-lead with six boards each.  Brandon Key dished out six assists in the game as well.  South Dakota State returns to Brookings this weekend to open a three-game homestand. The Jackrabbits host Nebraska Kearney Friday night at 7:00pm, host Florida Gulf Coast December 18th at 7:00pm and host Idaho December 21st also at 7:00pm.  The Jackrabbit men will start the Summit League portion of their schedule on December 29th at Omaha.

 

The #6 ranked in NAIA DWU Tiger men, 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the GPAC, host Valley City State University at 7:00pm tonight at the Corn Palace in a men’s game only.  After tonight the Tiger men host Doane on Saturday before heading to Florida to play in the Cruzin Classic in Fort Lauderdale Florida December 20th and 21st.  The Tiger men will also play in the Hoop City Classic on December 27th and 28th at the Palace.

 

The #13 ranked DWU Tiger women, 8-3 overall and 3-3 in the GPAC, travel to Madison for a matchup with in-state foe Dakota State University at 5:30pm tonight.  After tonight the Lady Tigers host Doane on Saturday at 2:00pm.  After Saturday the DWU Lady Tigers also head to Florida for the Cruzin Classic December 18th and 19th.

 

South Dakota State women’s basketball, 6-4 overall, returns home as it welcomes Chattanooga to Frost Arena tonight.  Tipoff is set for 7:00pm with the Jackrabbit Pregame Show starting at 6:30pm tonight on KORN News Radio.  After tonight the Jackrabbit women continue their three-game home slate with a home game on Saturday against Central Michigan at 2:00pm and Tuesday at home against Marquette at 7:00pm.

 

The Q107-3 Basketball Game of the Week will tip-off this season on Friday in Emery between Corsica/Stickney and Bridgewater/Emery boys.  Tune in all season for a Game of the Week plus coverage of the Hanson and DWU Classic’s this season on 107.3 FM and on-line at q107radio.com.

 

The Mitchell Kernel boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will open the season at Huron on Saturday night at the Huron Arena.  The KORN News Radio Pregame Show starts at 5:00pm Saturday night with the varsity girl’s game set for 5:30pm and the boys’ varsity game to follow around 7:00pm.  Both Kernel basketball games can be heard on FM 101.3, AM 1490 and on-line at kornradio.com.  After Saturday the Kernels boys head to Rapid City Stevens and Central on December 20th and 21st while the Kernel girls host Stevens and Rapid City Central December 20th and 21st.

 

The Mitchell Kernel wrestlers, 3-2 overall in duals, competes in the two-day individual Rapid City Invite, beginning on Friday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.  After this weekend the Kernels return to the mats and wrestle at home against Huron on December 19th.

 

The Mitchell Marlins girl’s hockey team, 2-0 overall, travels to Brookings for a 7:00pm faceoff on Saturday at Larson Ice Center.

 

The Mitchell Marlins boy’s hockey team, 1-2 overall, faces Brookings at 8:00pm Friday at Mitchell Activity Center.
