MITCHELL, S.D. — The South Dakota High School Coaches Association has named Cory Aadland, activities director for the Mitchell School District, as its 2026 Athletic Director of the Year.
Aadland, who has served as Mitchell’s activities director since 2016, was recognized for his leadership, facility improvements, and commitment to education-based athletics.
During his decade-long tenure, Aadland has overseen major infrastructure projects for the district, including the installation of artificial turf, the opening of a $12 million Performing Arts Center, and the passage of a $17 million bond to finish athletic facilities at the new high school.
“Cory believes education-based athletics are a powerful extension of the classroom—developing leadership, character, accountability, and lifelong skills that prepare students for success far beyond graduation,” the SDHSCA said in a statement.
In addition to capital improvements, Aadland has spearheaded student leadership programs, expanded technology integration, and increased support networks for district coaches and student-athletes.
A Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA), Aadland serves as the SDIAAA Leadership Training Institute coordinator and is a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Board of Directors.
His prior honors include being named the 2021 SDIAAA Region 6 Athletic Director of the Year, receiving the 2021 Steve Berseth Professional Development Award, and earning the 2024 NIAAA State Award of Merit.
