Mitchell Finishes Runner-up at ESD Gymnastics Meet in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Mitchell Kernels turned in a strong, balanced performance on Saturday, finishing second overall at the Eastern South Dakota Conference gymnastics meet in Aberdeen.

Mitchell posted a team score of 146.725, trailing only Harrisburg (151.225) in the eight-team field. Brookings placed third at 143.4, followed by Watertown (142.025), Yankton (137.425), Pierre T.F. Riggs (135.025), Aberdeen Central (130.65) and Huron (121.7).

The Kernels were led by a pair of high finishes in the all-around, with Kyanna Gropper placing second overall at 37.95 and Olivia Prunty close behind in third at 37.225. Both gymnasts delivered consistent performances across all four events to anchor Mitchell’s team score.

On vault, Prunty led the Kernels with a 9.4 to place third, while Gropper followed with a 9.35 to place fourth. Abby Hohn added a 9.2 and Sury Bechen chipped in an 8.8 as Mitchell showed depth in the event.

Bars proved to be one of Mitchell’s strongest rotations. Prunty earned a runner-up finish with a 9.55, while Gropper placed third at 9.45. McKenna Auch (8.675), Ava Hart (8.55) and Abby Jo Helleloid (8.55) all delivered solid routines to keep the Kernels near the top of the standings.

On beam, Gropper again paced Mitchell with a 9.6, tying for third overall. Mitchell also had a strong showing on floor exercise. Prunty and Gropper each scored a 9.55 to tie for fifth overall.

Harrisburg’s Katelyn Maeschen won the all-around title with a 38.9 and captured event wins on bars, beam and floor, helping the Tigers claim the team championship.

The Kernels will compete in a last chance State Qualifer meet next Saturday, Feb. 7 in Watertown before hosting the Class AA State Meet on Feb. 13-14 at Mitchell High School.
